Real Madrid Open to Tchouameni Sale as Man Utd Pursues Transfer

Aurelien Tchouameni’s status at Real Madrid has shifted from untouchable cornerstone to potential asset on the market – and Manchester United are moving quickly to test that resolve.

According to reports in England, Madrid are now willing to sell the France international to United this summer for around £68 million, despite new head coach Jose Mourinho wanting to keep him at the Bernabeu. The change in stance is driven by a bigger play: raising funds for an audacious move for Manchester City lynchpin Rodri.

From pillar of the project to expendable

Tchouameni has been a central figure in Madrid’s midfield for four years, a key part of a side that has lifted both the Champions League and La Liga during his time in Spain. Signed in 2022 to help usher in a new era and effectively succeed Casemiro, he quickly became one of the first names on the teamsheet.

That grip has loosened.

A spat with Federico Valverde last season damaged his standing in the dressing room and, crucially, his “untouchable” status in the boardroom. The hierarchy now see an opportunity: cash in on a 26-year-old still in his prime, recover roughly what they paid, and push aggressively for Rodri.

Mourinho had mapped out his midfield with Tchouameni at the heart of it. Those plans are now being redrawn above his head.

United smell opportunity

Manchester United, in the middle of a major midfield rebuild, are ready to pounce. They have already spent heavily in that area: £35 million on Youri Tielemans to add the passing range they have long lacked in deeper zones, and £50 million on Andrey Santos as a dynamic, defensively-minded presence to grow alongside Kobbie Mainoo.

Casemiro’s departure and a serious injury to Manuel Ugarte forced United into action. Tchouameni has been viewed all summer as the dream signing to complete the overhaul, but the consistent message from Madrid had been clear: not for sale.

That message has changed. The Sun report that Madrid will now listen, and that a fee in the region of £68 million – close to their 2022 outlay – could be enough to take him to Old Trafford.

There is a neat symmetry to it. Madrid bought Tchouameni to replace Casemiro when the Brazilian left for United. Two years on, United are trying to prise the Frenchman away as Casemiro’s long-term successor. Full circle, with a very modern transfer twist.

The missing piece in Ten Hag’s puzzle

On the pitch, the fit is obvious.

United have lacked a genuine midfield conductor behind Bruno Fernandes for several seasons. Tielemans offers that passing profile, someone who can take the ball under pressure and dictate tempo. Santos brings legs, aggression and the ability to cover ground, with Mainoo earmarked as a long-term partner in a double pivot.

Tchouameni would give that structure teeth.

The former Monaco midfielder can sit at the base, screen the defence and win duels, while allowing Tielemans and Fernandes to step higher and focus on progressing the ball and creating chances. With him anchoring an increasingly settled back four, United’s midfield would finally have balance: bite, brains and bravery on the ball.

For Madrid, selling him would be a gamble wrapped in ambition. For United, it could be the deal that defines their midfield for the next five years.

Now the question is simple: will Los Blancos really sacrifice Mourinho’s preferred anchor to chase Rodri, and will United go all the way to test how serious they are?
