Real Madrid Open to Tchouameni Sale as Manchester United Shows Interest

Manchester United have moved for Aurelien Tchouameni – and this time Real Madrid are ready to talk.

United have made a firm enquiry for the France midfielder as they search for a specialist holding player, and senior figures at the Bernabeu are now willing to cash in if a suitable offer lands on the table. For a club that only four years ago paid an initial €80m, rising to €100m, to prise him from Monaco, that is a significant shift.

The timing is no accident. Tchouameni’s World Cup campaign with France is over, and sources in Madrid describe United’s interest as “strong”. He is tied to Real until 2028, yet the contract situation around him has grown strangely opaque. Reports in Spain suggested the 26-year-old had agreed an extension, but no announcement has followed, no photos, no staged handshake with the president.

At the same time, Real have been heavily linked with a move for Spain’s World Cup player of the tournament, Rodri. The Manchester City midfielder, 30, is out of contract next year and, while City would fight to keep him, a summer move has been widely discussed. If Madrid can prise him away, their midfield would be reshaped again – and someone would have to make way.

When Jose Mourinho walked back into the Bernabeu this summer, his plan was to keep Tchouameni at the heart of his squad. Mourinho knows the value of a disciplined No6, and Tchouameni has already shown he can anchor a Champions League-winning side and start a World Cup final. But Real are 15-time European champions for a reason: they are ruthless traders. With Bernardo Silva already through the door and used in a deeper role at City last season, and with Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde established, the numbers in midfield are starting to stack up.

Camavinga and Valverde both see their deals expire a year after Tchouameni’s. Madrid must decide who to build around and who to monetise. Right now, Tchouameni looks like the asset who can fund the next big swing.

For United, the attraction is obvious. They have already added Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to bulk out their midfield, but neither is a pure holding player. The squad still lacks a true No6, a specialist to sit, screen and set the tempo. Tchouameni ticks every box on their recruitment sheet: 26 years old, Champions League winner, World Cup pedigree, and neatly inside the club’s preferred age band of 22 to 26.

He is also the one that got away. United had the chance to sign him from Monaco in 2021 but had not budgeted for a major midfield deal. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted a midfielder and pushed for Declan Rice. The club looked elsewhere. Monaco sold to Madrid. Two years later, United spent £70m on Casemiro – the very man Tchouameni was bought to replace in Spain.

That move briefly looked inspired. Casemiro, 30 at the time, arrived in the aftermath of a 4-0 humiliation at Brentford and immediately imposed standards, dragging an ailing team into the Champions League places and lifting a trophy. Yet his United spell also bookended two of the club’s worst seasons in 34 and 51 years, and he departed last month, released after his form and physical level dipped sharply.

United’s record with Real Madrid imports is mixed at best. Casemiro shone, then faded. Raphael Varane arrived at 28 in 2021, a serial winner whose body refused to cooperate. He still started in League Cup and FA Cup final victories, but injuries bit hard and he too was released at the end of his deal. Go back further and the cautionary tale is Angel Di Maria, the £59.7m British record signing in 2014 who lasted less than a year and was loudly booed on his Old Trafford return with Paris Saint-Germain in 2019.

Those scars will not stop United this time. The need at the base of midfield is too acute, the market too thin for top-level No6s. Tchouameni’s availability changes the equation.

Real, for their part, have rarely been shy about refreshing a winning squad. They replaced Casemiro without blinking. They may yet try to do the same with Tchouameni if Rodri can be prised from City. The question now is simple: will United pay the price to fix a problem they have been circling for years, or watch another elite holding midfielder slip through their fingers?
