Real Madrid's €120m Pursuit of Yan Diomande

And then the spotlight snapped onto a 19-year-old winger from Ivory Coast. Yan Diomande.

The European champions have opened talks with RB Leipzig and, according to Bild, put €100 million ($113 million) on the table. For Leipzig, that figure doesn’t come close. They value Diomande at around €130 million ($148 million), but this is not one of those stand-off valuations designed to kill a deal. The feeling around the negotiation is that both clubs can meet somewhere in the middle, with a final fee likely to land near €120 million ($137 million).

An elite bidding war

Real Madrid are not alone at the door. The competition is heavyweight.

Liverpool have already tested Leipzig’s resolve with their own €100 million offer, only to be turned away. Paris Saint-Germain remain firmly in the hunt as well, and until very recently they looked to be in pole position. Diomande had identified the French champions as his preferred destination and even reached a preliminary five-year agreement with PSG.

That understanding is now on ice.

Madrid’s late arrival has blown the race wide open, just as it did a year ago with Franco Mastantuono, when a player seemingly bound for the Parc des Princes suddenly found another path laid out in white. This time, the shift is even more dramatic: as Diario AS reports, Diomande has put that early PSG agreement on hold while Madrid push ahead.

A powerful Madrid connection

There is another subtle link pulling Diomande towards the Bernabéu.

He is represented by Roc Nation Sports, the same agency that looks after Vinícius Júnior. The U.S.-based firm, founded by Jay-Z, is already deep in talks with Madrid over Vinícius’ contract extension, with the Brazilian’s current deal due to expire next summer.

Those conversations give Roc Nation a front-row seat to Madrid’s medium-term planning in attack. They also create a shared negotiating table, where Diomande’s future and Vinícius’ renewal can be discussed in the same breath.

Leipzig hold firm – for now

Publicly, Leipzig are playing it cool. They know what they have and they know how the market moves around a rare asset.

Sporting director Marcel Schäfer did not blink on Wednesday. “Our intention is for Yan Diomande to play for Leipzig next season,” he said, drawing a clear line in front of the cameras. The club, part of the Red Bull network, is also working on a contract extension that would push the winger’s deal beyond 2030.

Behind that stance, though, lies a familiar tension. A 19-year-old who has exploded in his first Bundesliga season, a World Cup breakout, three of Europe’s richest clubs in pursuit, and a valuation that would shatter Leipzig’s outgoing transfer records. Keeping him will be a monumental challenge.

From Leganés prospect to €100m-plus phenomenon

The speed of Diomande’s rise borders on brutal.

Just a year ago, he was signing his first major contract after moving from Leganés to Leipzig for €20 million ($23 million), having made only 10 LaLiga appearances. Ten. That was the entire top-flight sample before Leipzig took the plunge.

They were rewarded instantly.

In his debut Bundesliga campaign, Diomande delivered 15 goals and 11 assists, a return that launched him straight into the conversation about Europe’s most exciting young forwards. His form carried into the summer, where he helped Ivory Coast reach the round of 32 at the World Cup and lit up the tournament with several standout performances, including a goal-scoring display against Ecuador.

Youth, pace, relentlessness without the ball, the ability to take on defenders one-on-one, and the versatility to operate on either flank – it is a package that the modern superclub pays a premium for. Diomande ticks every box, then adds a few of his own.

Leganés watch the jackpot roll

Back in Butarque, every update on the negotiations must sound like the winning numbers being read out.

Leganés not only banked €20 million when they sold Diomande last summer, they also kept 10% of the profit from any future sale. That clause now looks like one of the smartest pieces of business in recent Spanish football.

If Leipzig end up agreeing a fee close to €100 million, Leganés stand to receive another substantial payment. Added to last year’s income, the Madrid-based club could ultimately collect around €30 million ($34 million) from a player who barely reached double figures in LaLiga appearances for them. Ten games, a generation-changing windfall.

A decision that shapes careers – and eras

So the scene is set.

Real Madrid have moved first with a formal bid and a clear plan. Liverpool remain in the fight after seeing their opening offer rebuffed. PSG, once confident, now wait to see whether the pull of the Bernabéu overrides a deal that was already sketched out.

Leipzig insist they want Diomande in their colours next season. The market, and the numbers being whispered, say something very different.
