Referee Injured in Pre-Season Friendly Incident

A pre-season friendly in eastern France turned ugly on Saturday when referee Mathilde Demoncay suffered a concussion after being knocked to the ground while trying to break up a mass confrontation between players.

The 26-year-old official was in charge of a warm-up match between French side Metz and Dutch club Fortuna Sittard at Schlossberg Stadium in Forbach when tempers boiled over late in the first half.

What began as a routine tug on a shirt in the 40th minute suddenly escalated. Two opposing players squared up, chests pressed together, words flying. Within seconds, teammates from both sides sprinted in, the flashpoint swelling into a melee.

Demoncay moved decisively towards the fray, stepping between bodies in an effort to calm the situation. She never made it. Caught in the surge of players, she was knocked off balance and crashed heavily to the turf, video on social media showed.

The scene carried a grim irony. The scuffle unfolded directly in front of a large pitchside banner bearing a simple message: “Respect the referee.”

Demoncay lay on the grass for several minutes, clutching her arm as the stadium fell into a hush. Assistant referees, security staff and medical personnel sprinted onto the pitch, forming a protective ring around her while they assessed the damage and pushed players away.

Play eventually resumed, and in a show of determination Demoncay returned to the touchline, switching roles to act as an assistant referee for the remainder of the half. She did not emerge after the interval. Another assistant took over her duties, with local reports later confirming she had suffered a concussion and could not continue.

On the pitch, Metz went on to win the friendly 3-1 as both clubs continued their preparations for the new season. Off it, the incident overshadowed the scoreline.
