Rodri Joins Barcelona: Deal Confirmed and No.16 Shirt Secured

Barcelona have their man. Only the official statement is missing.

The Catalan club have finalised an agreement with Manchester City for Rodri, with the announcement expected within hours. The structure of the deal underlines how badly Barça wanted the Spain midfielder: 60 million euros as a fixed fee, plus a further 16 million tied to incentives and variables.

Rodri will sign for four seasons and step straight into the upper tier of the wage bill. His net salary will exceed 13 million euros per year, placing him among the highest earners in the squad and signalling the central role the club envisage for him at the heart of the team.

The battle for No.16

Before he has even been unveiled, one detail has already been settled behind the scenes: his number.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that Rodri asked Fermin Lopez to give up the No.16 shirt, the number he has worn consistently for Manchester City and the Spanish national team. It is the shirt that has become part of his identity, and he wanted to carry it with him into his new era in Catalonia.

Fermin did not stand in the way. According to Romano, the young Barcelona midfielder agreed to change his number and is preparing to switch to the No.7 shirt. That decision clears the path for Rodri to keep his familiar 16 on his back when he walks out at the Spotify Camp Nou.

Barcelona are expected to confirm Rodri’s squad number when they make the transfer official. All signs point in the same direction: a record of dominance from Manchester and with Spain, now set to continue in Barcelona blue and red, with the same No.16 anchoring the midfield in a new chapter.
