Roma Targets Young Talent Said El Mala Amid Bundesliga Interest

AS Roma have found their next big swing in the transfer market. On their list for a new left winger sits Said El Mala, the 19-year-old talent from 1. FC Köln, and the Giallorossi are, according to Geissblog, prepared to go all-in.

Köln want €50 million. Roma, it seems, are not blinking.

The figure fits the pattern. The club from the capital have already been linked with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Jean-Matteo Bahoya, with a fee of around €45 million discussed. If they are ready to push that far for Bahoya, it signals a clear willingness to stretch to a similar level for El Mala.

There is one major problem: the player himself.

Sky reports that the seven-time Germany Under-21 international does not currently picture his immediate future in Serie A. Roma may be ready. Italy, for El Mala, is not.

Dortmund deal collapses amid anger in Cologne

While Roma weigh up their options, one door has already slammed shut. A move to Borussia Dortmund, long seen as a natural step for a young German-based attacker, is now described as definitively off.

Geissblog reports that Köln were unhappy on two fronts. The financial package from Dortmund did not meet their expectations. More damaging, in the eyes of the Effzeh hierarchy, was how the Black and Yellows handled the pursuit.

Köln were, it is said, “not in agreement with the manner in which Dortmund are said to have tried to influence the player in order to make a move more likely”. That line cut deep at the Geißbockheim. Internally, the decision followed quickly: break off all negotiations with Borussia. Immediately. No way back.

With Dortmund out, the market around El Mala has thinned at the top level of the Bundesliga. Yet the story has not gone quiet.

Leipzig hesitate as price bites

In Germany, only RB Leipzig are still standing as a realistic suitor. For now, they are standing at a distance.

According to Geissblog, Leipzig have informed Köln that they neither can nor want to meet the €50 million asking price at this stage. The valuation has drawn a clear line. Leipzig are on the other side of it.

A twist remains possible, but it depends on money coming in. The scenario is straightforward: if Leipzig manage to cash in on Yan Diomande, fresh funds could reopen the door. Only then would they have the financial room to launch another push for El Mala.

Until that happens, the race feels stuck. Roma are rich but not desired. Leipzig are keen but constrained. Dortmund are out, and out in a way that may linger in relationships between the clubs.

El Mala answers with performances

While executives argue numbers and principles, El Mala is doing the one thing he can fully control: playing.

In Thursday’s 8-0 pre-season win over Bergisch Gladbach, the teenager found the net for his first goal of the current campaign. A friendly, yes, but another reminder of why Europe’s recruiters keep circling a player who has not yet turned 20.

Köln hold a valuable asset. Roma are ready to pay. Leipzig are watching their balance sheet.

The question now is simple: when the window closes, will El Mala still be lighting up pre-season games in Cologne – or will someone finally match both the price and the player’s own ambitions?
