Rotherham United Sign Former Manchester United Defender Sonny Aljofree
Rotherham United have dipped into Manchester United’s academy pool, handing a two-year deal to versatile defender Sonny Aljofree after his release from Old Trafford this summer.
The 22-year-old, comfortable at both centre-back and right-back, joins the Millers with the club also holding an option to extend his stay by a further year. It is a calculated move: low risk, potentially high reward, and very much in step with how clubs at this level try to steal a march in the market.
Aljofree arrives with a pedigree that still carries weight. He was part of the Manchester United side that lifted the FA Youth Cup in the 2021-22 season, a competition that has long acted as a barometer for emerging talent. He never broke through to the first team, but that medal hints at the standards he has been schooled in.
Game time came away from Old Trafford. Aljofree picked up senior experience in loan spells with Altrincham and Accrington Stanley before heading to Notts County last season. Those stints, in the unforgiving world of lower-league football, will matter more to Rotherham than any age-group accolades.
There is also a family thread running through the move. Sonny is the son of former Plymouth Argyle defender Hasney Aljofree, a name familiar to followers of the Football League. The Millers are not just signing a player; they are bringing in someone who has grown up around the realities of the professional game.
Rotherham’s staff have already had a close look. Aljofree has been on trial with the club during pre-season, giving coaches ample time to assess his temperament, fitness and adaptability before committing to a contract.
Now the trial period is over. The next test is whether a former Manchester United youth champion can turn potential into presence in the heart of Rotherham’s back line.
