Slavko Vincic has chosen his moment to step away. Just days after taking charge of the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina on July 19, the Slovenian referee has blown the whistle on his professional career.

The Slovenian Football Federation (NZS) confirmed on Monday that the 46-year-old has retired, closing the book on one of the most respected refereeing careers of his generation.

“One week after the World Cup final in the USA, Slavko Vincic has officially brought his historic refereeing career at the top of this sport to an end,” the NZS announced on its website, underlining the significance of his final assignment.

For a referee, there is no higher stage than a World Cup final. By handling that showpiece, the federation of the small Adriatic nation believes Vincic “consolidated his status as one of the best referees in history” – a bold line, but one backed by the recognition that followed.

The accolades arrived quickly. To cap his farewell season, the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) named him the best referee of the World Cup, highlighting “the clear and firm disciplinary control that characterizes elite refereeing.” It was a neat encapsulation of the style that carried him to the top: calm under pressure, strict when needed, and unwavering in big moments.

His work in the United States also earned him the prestigious “Giulio Campanati” prize in Italy, another nod from within the game to a referee whose performances convinced players, coaches and officials on football’s biggest stage.

Vincic exits with the rare distinction of leaving at the summit, his final act etched into World Cup history and his legacy secure in the annals of refereeing.
