Tragedy Strikes After Spain's World Cup Victory in Salamanca

The night Spain reclaimed the world title was supposed to end in song, car horns and flags draped from every balcony. In Ciudad Rodrigo, in Salamanca province, it ended with sirens.

A 13-year-old boy died shortly after midnight when part of the Árbol Gordo fountain collapsed during celebrations for Spain’s World Cup victory. Two other young people were injured, emergency services confirmed, one of them a child taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg.

What began as a spontaneous outpouring of joy turned into a scene of chaos in seconds. Dozens of youths had climbed into and onto the historic fountain in the town, joining thousands across the country marking Spain’s 1-0 extra-time win over Argentina, sealed by Ferran Torres’ goal in Sunday’s final.

Around 00:30 local time (23:30 BST), the structure could no longer bear the weight. Part of the fountain gave way, sending stone and concrete crashing down on those celebrating inside it. Witnesses called emergency services for Castilla y León as panic spread through the square.

Crews arrived to find the celebrations silenced and the area around Árbol Gordo transformed into an improvised emergency zone. Despite efforts to save the 13-year-old, he was pronounced dead. The other injured youngsters were treated, with one transported to hospital for further assessment of a possible leg fracture.

Ciudad Rodrigo’s town hall captured the mood of a community stunned by the sudden shift from euphoria to mourning. “What was supposed to be a celebration for the victory in the Spanish National Football Team's World Cup has turned into a tragedy,” it posted on social media, as flags and shirts that had been waved in triumph hours earlier were lowered in grief.

Local media reported that the section of the fountain collapsed after several people clambered onto it to celebrate Spain’s win, a familiar sight across the country whenever La Roja triumphs on the biggest stage. This time, the tradition carried a devastating cost.

Authorities said they received multiple calls about the incident as the scale of the collapse became clear. The city council expressed its condolences and “hopes for a speedy recovery of the others who have been affected by the incident,” but in Ciudad Rodrigo, the focus has already shifted from the scoreboard in the World Cup final to difficult questions about safety, responsibility and how a night of national pride could end in such loss.
