Arsenal’s ambitious move for Vinicius Jr is over before it ever truly began. Real Madrid have reached an agreement in principle with the Brazilian on a new contract, closing off one of the most eye-catching potential transfers of the summer.

According to The Athletic, Vinicius has agreed improved terms after talks with Madrid on Wednesday, a deal that underlines his status at the heart of the club’s long-term project. His current contract, due to expire next summer, is worth around €17.5m a year. The new agreement is understood to land closer to €25m annually, after the player initially pushed for a package in the region of €30m plus upgraded image rights.

Madrid have effectively met him halfway. The numbers reflect it: this is the salary of a franchise player, not a negotiable asset.

For Arsenal, it brings a firm full stop to an audacious plan. The club had identified the 26-year-old as a marquee attacking target and were ready to act decisively if his talks in Spain collapsed. The Athletic report that Vinicius was open to the idea of a move to north London had negotiations with Madrid broken down.

They never did. The door never truly swung open.
