Youri Tielemans Set for Manchester United Debut Against PSG

Youri Tielemans is set to pull on a Manchester United shirt for the first time this weekend, with Michael Carrick ready to unleash his new midfielder against Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg.

The Belgian, signed from Aston Villa last month for around £35million on a five-year deal running to 2031, joined up with the squad only last week after Belgium’s run to the World Cup quarter-finals in North America and a well-earned holiday. He watched from the sidelines as United beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 in Stockholm in the Snapdragon Cup, but this time he is on the plane and firmly in Carrick’s plans.

At 29, with spells at Leicester, Monaco and Anderlecht already behind him, Tielemans arrives as a ready-made operator rather than a project. Carrick’s first full pre-season in charge now has its marquee midfield addition on board, and the expectation is that Tielemans will get his first minutes in red at the Nya Ullevi Stadium against the back-to-back European champions.

Fernandes Returns, but Two Stay Home

The good news for United does not stop with Tielemans. Captain Bruno Fernandes is also back in the fold and in line to feature in Sweden after his own post-World Cup break. He returns alongside Portugal team-mate Diogo Dalot, Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha and Morocco defender Noussair Mazraoui, all of whom reported back this week.

Yet just as Carrick’s options seemed to swell, came a setback. Cunha, despite rejoining the group, will not be available to face PSG. First-choice goalkeeper Senne Lammens is also ruled out. Both have remained at Carrington to, in the club’s words, “fully recover from non-related minor illnesses”, with the expectation they will rejoin the squad during next week’s training camp in the Republic of Ireland.

Their absence bites hardest in goal. With Lammens out, new signing Karl Darlow unavailable and Altay Bayindir and Radek Vitek departing for Celta Vigo and Middlesbrough respectively, veteran Tom Heaton stands as the senior option. Behind him, Dermot Mee and teenager Fred Heath are drafted in as cover for the glamour friendly.

Injury List and Late Returns

The fitness bulletin does not end there. Striker Benjamin Sesko remains sidelined with a shin injury that has carried over from last season, while Matthijs de Ligt is still not ready to return from a long-term back problem.

Several key names are yet to rejoin the group at all. Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford and Lisandro Martinez remain on holiday after their World Cup exertions and are due to link up with United in Ireland rather than in Sweden.

The youthful flavour of Carrick’s pre-season continues, but with a slightly different cast. Fifteen-year-old JJ Gabriel, who made his senior debut off the bench against Atletico, is not involved this weekend. Fellow youngsters Jim Thwaites, Jaydan Kamason and Ethan Williams also drop out of the travelling party.

Heath steps in for Bayindir among the goalkeepers, while Harry Amass, Dan Armer, Jack Fletcher, Tyler Fletcher and Shea Lacey all retain their places. Joshua Zirkzee, heavily linked with a summer exit, also stays in the squad and remains part of Carrick’s attacking options for now.

Busy Summer, Big Season

The PSG clash is one of the marquee fixtures in a packed summer that is building towards Carrick’s first Premier League campaign as permanent manager after his successful interim spell last term.

After Gothenburg, United head to the Republic of Ireland for a training camp, capped by a meeting with rivals Leeds at Croke Park in Dublin on August 12. The summer schedule then closes against AC Milan in Wroclaw, Poland on August 15.

Then comes the real test. United open their league season away at Championship play-off winners Hull on August 22, a fixture that will start to reveal whether Carrick’s reshaped squad – with Tielemans at its heart and key figures returning from international duty – can turn a promising pre-season into something far more substantial.

For now, the focus is simple: a debut for Tielemans, a reunion with Fernandes, and a showdown with Europe’s dominant force, all without their first-choice goalkeeper and a key forward. How United cope in Gothenburg will offer an early glimpse of Carrick’s resolve before the serious business begins.
