Youri Tielemans Transfer: A Steal for Manchester United

Manchester United have spent hundreds of millions trying to fix their midfield in recent years. According to two men who know the Premier League inside out, they might finally have cracked it – and at a price that has stunned former pros.

For John Obi Mikel, a Champions League winner and long-time Chelsea anchorman, the Youri Tielemans deal is not just good business. It’s the standout midfield signing of the summer.

Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel didn’t bother dressing it up.

“For me, it’s Youri Tielemans. Honestly, how the f*ck did Manchester United get him for £35m? That’s a f*cking steal,” he said, still incredulous at the fee. “I watched him before and during the World Cup, and you can see that this is a player.”

That last word carried weight. Mikel has shared dressing rooms with some of the finest midfielders of his generation. Tielemans, in his eyes, belongs in that conversation.

A Midfield Chameleon

What really excites Mikel is Tielemans’ tactical range. United have long searched for balance between control, creativity and goal threat. In the Belgian, Mikel sees all three.

“Obviously, we all know how Tielemans plays, he can play as a six, an eight or a ten,” he explained. “When you have a player that can play anywhere, it gives you the variety to change the way you want to play. Tielemans is that guy.”

He didn’t stop there. Goals, set pieces, composure – Mikel ticked through the checklist of a modern, elite midfielder.

“He scores goals, he’s dangerous from set pieces, he’s brilliant on the ball, and he rarely gives it away,” he said.

The only caveat, the one criticism that tends to follow Tielemans, is his lack of raw pace. Mikel waved that away.

“The only thing people can say is that he’s not the quickest, but he reads the game so well. He is very intelligent with and without the ball. When I look at all the midfielders that have transferred to different clubs [this summer], the best one is Tielemans.”

That is not a throwaway line. In a market inflated by eye-watering fees for midfielders across Europe, Mikel is adamant: United’s £35m outlay is the pick of the bunch.

Alderweireld: “You Have to Watch Him”

If Mikel focused on Tielemans’ versatility and intelligence, Toby Alderweireld homed in on something more subtle: bravery on the ball.

The former Tottenham Hotspur defender, who shared a dressing room with Tielemans for Belgium, knows how his compatriot looks from close range – and how easily he can be misunderstood by those who live only by numbers.

“The problem with modern football is that sometimes we look too much at stats like assists and goals,” Alderweireld told Hajper. “Of course, Youri Tielemans creates assists and scores goals, and can shoot from outside the box and score free kicks, but he is so much more than that.”

For Alderweireld, the essence of Tielemans’ game lies in what happens between the lines, in the passes that don’t always make a highlight reel but break the shape of an opponent.

“Tielemans is a link up player, and you have to watch him to understand why he is so important to his teams, not just look at his stats, because he is always trying to play the ball forward,” he said.

Then came the contrast that will resonate with United fans tired of sterile possession.

“You have some midfield players who have a pass success rate of 98% but they are always playing the ball backwards. Tielemans is a guy who turns, opens up and plays the ball between the lines, and that’s very important for a club like Manchester United who need to break other teams down.”

In other words: he takes risks. He moves the game on. He doesn’t hide.

Built for Old Trafford Pressure

That willingness to force the issue can be a double-edged sword at a club like United. Every misplaced pass gets replayed, every turnover dissected. Alderweireld believes Tielemans has the mentality to live with that scrutiny – and to thrive under it.

“Even when he’s playing in a deep role, he’s playing it in an attacking way. He’s thinking about going forwards, always,” Alderweireld said.

Sometimes that means surrendering the ball. For Alderweireld, that’s not a flaw. It’s the cost of trying to change a game.

“Sometimes he will lose the ball but that’s what happens when you take some risks in games to make things happen, and I think that’s something United need, and he has the mentality to be brave and positive under the big pressure of the shirt.”

That “pressure of the shirt” has crushed plenty of talented players at Old Trafford. Alderweireld is convinced Tielemans will respond to it, not retreat from it.

“He will put in ultra big effort and say to his team-mates, give me the ball and let me change the game for you. He will take the responsibility to take Manchester United forward.”

Responsibility. Risk. Variety. Intelligence. Strip away the expletives and the admiration from two seasoned professionals, and that is what United believe they have bought for £35m.

If they’re right, and if Tielemans delivers that blend in the Premier League’s harshest spotlight, the question won’t be how United got him so cheaply – it’ll be how everyone else let him go there first.
