Adam Wharton's Future at Crystal Palace: A Likely Departure

Adam Wharton’s long goodbye at Crystal Palace already feels under way.

Across both 2026 windows his name never really left the conversation. Palace, chasing a shot at Conference League glory, simply shut the door in January. Selling a cornerstone midfielder mid-campaign was never on the table.

Summer felt different. Or it was supposed to. Big bids were expected, big questions too. They came, but nothing landed. Palace spent heavily elsewhere instead, with the likes of Anderson, Fernandez, Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Morgan Rogers grabbing the headlines.

Wharton stayed put. Quietly. No fuss, no public push to leave. Yet around Selhurst Park, few truly believe this is a long-term story. It feels like the start of a farewell.

Clinton Morrison, who knows the club and its chairman well, isn’t dressing it up.

Speaking to GOAL via Freebets.com, the former Palace striker was blunt about the Blackburn academy graduate’s future: “I'll be honest with you, next summer he will be gone, for sure.

“Palace can't keep Adam Wharton without a shadow of doubt. If you've seen all these midfielders that are moving, Adam Wharton is just as good as all these midfielders. He'll be gone in the summer. I think they'll have another year.”

The interest is already there. Morrison says it has been for some time.

“There were a lot of clubs that were interested in him anyway in the summer. But they can't afford to lose Adam Wharton when they already lost [Maxence] Lacroix and other big players.

“He'll be gone next summer. He's a top player and I've got so much time and admiration for him. So I know for a fact he won't be there in the summer. Even in January, I think teams will come knocking. But I don't think Palace will do business there. But next summer, I think the chairman already knows he won't be at that football club.”

The only real unknown now is the number on the cheque.

With midfielders routinely smashing transfer records, the question is obvious: will Wharton be another £100m-plus deal? Morrison thinks he is in that bracket.

“He's in that ballpark. And the chairman won't take no less than that, for sure. I know what he's like.

“You get big money from him because he's a special player. And he's young. He's at a good age. He's 22 years of age. So he's still got loads of football left in him and he hasn't even peaked yet.

“Listen, I know what the chairman's like. If you want to prise Adam Wharton away, you're going to have to pay some big money. But there is a lot of money with all these midfielders that are going for these ridiculous prices. So midfielders are more important now than anyone. It looks like that with the money that's being spent on them.”

Manchester United have tracked him before, though they moved for Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans in the last window. Liverpool have also been credited with serious interest and could easily return to the table once this campaign ends.

There is another layer to this, too. Wharton is not just seen as Premier League material. There have been suggestions he could jump straight to a European heavyweight, such is the confidence in his ability to slot into almost any dressing room in world football.

For now, Palace still have him. They still build around him. But with the market circling and the chairman braced for a bidding war, the real question is no longer whether Adam Wharton leaves.

It is who wins the race to take him.
