Adama Traoré's Potential Move to Deportivo La Coruña

Adama Traoré could be heading back to Spain – and back into the spotlight.

Released by West Ham United at the end of last season, the 30-year-old winger is a free agent and now a genuine option for Deportivo La Coruña, according to Spanish outlet Marca. Journalist Matteo Moretto reported on X that Deportivo have made contact with Traoré and view him as a “real option” – but only if the financial package fits their structure.

That caveat matters. Deportivo are back in La Liga after years in the wilderness, but this is not the free-spending Super Depor of old. Every move has to be calculated.

Deportivo look to patch a weak flank

Antonio Hidalgo has a clear problem on the right wing. David Mella, the young wide man who offered energy and directness, is sidelined with a torn lateral meniscus. There is no firm date for his return. Luismi Cruz is available for that role, but the depth is thin and the margin for error in a survival fight is even thinner.

Deportivo’s first season back in Spain’s top flight starts on Monday at home to Elche. The calendar offers no time for sentiment. They need solutions now.

Traoré, with his explosive pace and versatility, fits the profile. He can operate on the right, cut in from the left, or even lead the line as a centre-forward. For a newly promoted side, that kind of tactical flexibility is gold.

A career that never quite settled

His brief spell at West Ham never ignited. Signed from Fulham in January, Traoré made just 12 appearances, failed to score, and registered two assists as the Hammers slid out of the Premier League. He arrived as a mid-season gamble and left as a free agent, his contract allowed to run down.

England has seen far better versions of him. At Wolverhampton Wanderers he terrorised full-backs and built a reputation as one of the most physically dominant wingers in the league. Middlesbrough and Fulham also benefited from his raw power and ball-carrying. Before that, Aston Villa gave him his first taste of English football.

The numbers have rarely matched the highlights, but the highlights have always been spectacular.

A return that makes sense

A move to Spain would close a circle. Traoré came through Barcelona’s academy, broke into the first team, and later returned to Camp Nou on loan from Wolves. He has eight caps for Spain, a reminder that his peak level once convinced national-team selectors.

For Deportivo, that pedigree matters. They are not chasing nostalgia for the early-2000s Champions League nights; they are trying to build a squad robust enough to stay in La Liga. A 30-year-old with top-flight experience across two major leagues, capable of covering multiple attacking roles, fits that mission.

Other paths had seemed possible. There was talk of a reunion with Marco Silva at Benfica, a move that would have reunited Traoré with the coach who used him at Fulham. Those rumours have cooled. Samsunspor, from the Turkish Super Lig, have also been linked this window, offering a different kind of project and environment.

For now, though, it is Deportivo who have stepped forward.

West Ham move on

Back in London, West Ham are unlikely to dwell on his departure. They retained Jarrod Bowen, their key attacking threat, and brought in Manor Solomon from Tottenham Hotspur. Solomon can play on the right but is more naturally a left-winger, giving the Hammers a different type of wide option to the direct, bulldozing style Traoré brings.

For club and player, the separation feels clean. West Ham reset in the Championship. Traoré hunts his next stage.

The question now is simple: will his next electric sprint come in the blue and white of a club desperate to re-establish itself among Spain’s elite, or will Deportivo decide that even for a player of his profile, the price is just too high?
