Ainsley Maitland-Niles Returns to Premier League with Everton After Lyon Transfer
Everton have finalized the permanent signing of Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Lyon, offering the club a solution in their search for a reliable right-back. The defender, formerly of Arsenal, returns to English football following three solid seasons competing in France's Ligue 1.
Filling the Gap at Right-Back
The Merseyside side moved quickly to bring Maitland-Niles in after their long-serving captain Seamus Coleman ended his 17-year association with the club. Reports from The Athletic indicated that Everton also considered Fulham’s Kenny Tete before settling on the 29-year-old Arsenal academy product.
Official Announcement and Squad Impact
Everton confirmed the signing on their official X account, stating: "We have completed the signing of Ainsley Maitland-Niles on a permanent transfer from Olympique Lyonnais for an undisclosed fee. Welcome to Everton, Ainsley!" This marks Maitland-Niles as the seventh addition this summer, joining Merlin Rohl, Hayden Hackney, Tyrique George, Christian Norgaard, Brennan Johnson, and the return of Jack Grealish on loan.
Maitland-Niles’ European Experience
An Arsenal academy graduate, Maitland-Niles boasts a resume including an FA Cup win with Arsenal and a UEFA Europa Conference League title with Roma. His time in France began in August 2023, where he made 119 appearances across all competitions for Lyon. Last season alone, he contributed 22 goals and assists combined, starting in 28 league matches. His ability to play both full-back and midfield roles adds valuable flexibility to manager David Moyes’ defensive options.
Upcoming Debut Against Manchester United
Assuming no registration issues arise, Maitland-Niles could debut for Everton when they host Manchester United at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday. This high-profile Premier League match will test his readiness and offer him the chance to stake an early claim for a starting spot ahead of the international break.
