Ajax and Owen Wijndal Part Ways as Left-Back Hierarchy Changes

Ajax and Owen Wijndal have cut ties with immediate effect, drawing a sudden line under a spell in Amsterdam that never quite lived up to its early promise.

The 26-year-old left-back, once signed as a cornerstone for the future, found himself without a realistic path to minutes this season. With his prospects fading, both club and player agreed to terminate a contract that was originally due to run until mid-2027 at the Johan Cruyff ArenA.

The decision is as much about the present as the future. By ending the deal now, Ajax clear space in their wage bill and underline a changing of the guard at left-back.

That shift has been clear all summer. Ajax moved decisively in the market, bringing in Caio Henrique and 19-year-old Spaniard Jofre Torrents. Henrique quickly edged ahead of Wijndal in the hierarchy in recent weeks. Then came the moment that said more than any official statement.

In the 0-4 win over Telstar, Torrents came off the bench to make his mark. Wijndal never left his seat.

For a player once seen as a long-term starter, it was a stark snapshot of where he now stood.

Talks between Ajax and Wijndal had been ongoing in recent weeks as both sides searched for a way out of the stalemate. That solution has now arrived. On Wednesday, the Zaandam-born defender said his goodbyes to his team-mates and walked away as a free agent, with his next club still unknown.

Ajax had brought him in from AZ in 2022 for around €10 million, betting on a Dutch international-calibre full-back entering his prime. Instead, his trajectory in Amsterdam stalled. The 2023/24 season saw him loaned out to Royal Antwerp FC, a clear signal that his status at the club had weakened.

Across his time in Amsterdam, Wijndal made 77 official appearances for Ajax, contributing 3 goals and 7 assists. Respectable numbers, but not enough to cement his place once the competition intensified.

Now Ajax move on with Henrique and Torrents battling for the left side of defence, while Wijndal faces a different kind of fight: choosing the right next step to relaunch a career that still has time, but no more time to waste.
