Al-Ittihad Sign Fares Abdi as Left-Back for Squad Rebuild

Al-Ittihad have moved decisively to close a key gap in their back line, sealing the signing of left-back Fares Abdi from Neom after swift negotiations over the financial and contractual details.

The Jeddah giants announced the deal across their official channels, confirming the transfer had been wrapped up in the past few hours. It is a move driven from the dugout as much as the boardroom. Head coach Jens Wissing specifically pushed for Abdi, identifying him as the man to reinforce a vulnerable left flank and step into the role left vacant by the late Mario Metaj.

The club had drawn up a shortlist of options. Abdi emerged at the top, edging out several rivals to claim the starting berth and becoming the latest piece in Al-Ittihad’s summer rebuild as they reshape the squad for the new season.

For the 27-year-old, this is the next step in a career that has already taken an unconventional route. Born in California, he learned the game on American pitches before switching to the Saudi scene in 2020 with Al-Wehda. Stints at Al-Qadsiah and Al-Fayha followed, each one adding layers to his game and his understanding of the league’s demands.

Last summer he joined Neom, where he became a fixture in the side. Abdi featured in 34 matches and delivered 3 assists, numbers that underline his reliability and willingness to drive forward from deep.
