Alejandro Balde's Future at Barcelona: Manchester United Interest Grows

Barcelona’s overhaul is gathering pace, and now even Alejandro Balde is standing closer to the exit than the pitch.

Ronald Araujo has gone. Ferran Torres too. Joao Cancelo is about to walk through the door. In the middle of that traffic, a homegrown full-back who was once seen as a long-term pillar suddenly looks expendable.

United move to the front of the queue

According to MARCA, Jorge Mendes flew into Barcelona this week carrying multiple offers for both Balde and Marc Casado. The super-agent first sat down with the club’s sporting director, then presented the options directly to the players.

Casado’s departure had been expected. Balde’s? Not so much.

The tone changed the moment his name vanished from the squad list to face Elche. No injury, no suspension. Just omitted. Inside the club, that was read as a clear signal: serious talks are underway.

Balde now has three firm offers on the table. Manchester United are described as the leading contender, with two other clubs also pushing hard for the Spain international. For all the noise, though, sources close to the situation maintain that a deal is not yet at the final stage. His future is not expected to be settled for at least a few more days.

Cancelo’s shadow and a blocked pathway

The main problem for Balde is simple: Cancelo.

The Portuguese defender is on the verge of arriving and is expected to become Hansi Flick’s first-choice left-back this season. For a young player who needs rhythm and minutes, that changes everything. One year ago, Balde looked like the future of the position at Barcelona. Now, with Cancelo about to lock down that flank, his route to regular football looks badly congested.

Being left out against Elche only reinforced that impression. It felt less like a one-off decision and more like the first step in a separation. The club are not closing the door completely on him staying, but the likelihood of Balde remaining at Barcelona is shrinking fast.

If he does go, Barcelona will have to react in the market. The replacement might not be a like-for-like left-back. The club have long studied the idea of adding another centre-back, and that option is firmly on the table.

A new central defender would allow Gerard Martin to slide across to left-back when needed, giving Flick a different kind of flexibility and easing the blow of losing one of La Masia’s brightest recent graduates.

For Balde, the choice is looming: fight for a place under Flick in the shadow of Cancelo, or seize a leading role elsewhere – with Old Trafford currently looking like the clearest escape route.
