Alejandro Balde set to leave Barcelona this summer
Alejandro Balde’s time at FC Barcelona is moving towards a sudden and significant turning point.
According to Jijantes FC, the 22-year-old left-back has decided to leave the club this summer, with his agent Jorge Mendes already working in the final days of the window to secure him a new destination. Mendes has been in Barcelona this week, not just for routine talks, but now with a clear mission: place one of La Masia’s brightest recent graduates at a new club.
From future starter to expendable
Balde’s situation has been simmering for months.
He lost his starting spot in the second half of last season, with Joao Cancelo taking over the left flank. When Barcelona then brought Cancelo back on a permanent deal this summer, the message grew harder to ignore. The battle for that position had tilted decisively away from the academy product.
All summer, Balde publicly maintained the same line: he wanted to stay, fight, and prove he belonged in the starting XI at his boyhood club. Inside the club, though, doubts were growing.
Hansi Flick did little to hide his reservations. Speaking in his press conference earlier today, the Barcelona manager praised Balde’s talent but underlined the standards required.
“It’s a difficult question. Balde has a lot of quality. For me it is important, as I have said before, you have to have the condition to compete in a home position and this I want to see in each player,” Flick said.
“I see what they do every day, which shows me that they are ready to play at the highest level. In the end, we will only succeed as a team. We need everyone 100% committed to us.”
Those words landed with weight. Inside the club, conversations with Mendes and Balde followed. The result: the defender is now ready to “pursue a new adventure” in his career, opening the door to an exit that once seemed unlikely.
United circle, Milan hesitate
The timing of Balde’s decision is no coincidence. Interest has been building.
Manchester United have already made their move in the background. As confirmed by Fabrizio Romano earlier this week, the Premier League club contacted Mendes to ask about Balde’s situation and the conditions for a possible transfer. United’s need for a dynamic, long-term option at left-back makes the Spaniard a natural name on their list.
On the continent, AC Milan have also been offered the player. The Italian side admire his profile, but one obstacle stands in the way: money. Barcelona value Balde at more than €40 million, a figure that could prove too steep for Milan in this window.
Barcelona, for their part, are now prepared to sell. Once protected as a key homegrown asset, Balde has shifted into the category of a valuable saleable piece as the club wrestles with financial constraints and Flick reshapes the squad in his own image.
Immediate consequences
The impact of this decision could be felt immediately.
There is already a real chance Balde will not even make the squad for tomorrow’s La Liga opener against Elche. A few months ago, that would have sounded unthinkable for a player tipped to be the long-term owner of the left flank at Camp Nou.
Now, it looks like the start of life after Balde for Barcelona – and the beginning of a scramble among Europe’s elite to see who moves quickest for a 22-year-old full-back suddenly on the market.
