Aleksandar Pavlovic Rejects Manchester City Move

Aleksandar Pavlovic has turned down one of the most aggressive midfield rebuilds Europe has seen in years – and he did it without Manchester City ever placing an official bid.

According to Bild, the 22-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder has been on City’s shortlist since March, when the club earmarked him as their top target for the heart of their new-look side. The Premier League champions were prepared to go as high as €100 million to get him.

Pavlovic’s answer was simple: no.

He had no interest in leaving Bayern for England, even as the ground shifted beneath City’s feet.

Guardiola exit, Maresca push – still no Pavlovic

By spring, it was already clear inside the club that Pep Guardiola would step down and Enzo Maresca would take over. The Italian, fresh from his rise as a highly rated coach, threw himself into the Pavlovic pursuit.

Maresca tried personally to convince the midfielder. Phone calls, direct contact, the full charm offensive. It didn’t move the needle.

With the Germany international categorically ruling out a transfer, City pulled back before talks could ever formalise. No proposal, no negotiation, no late drama. Just a target who refused to be tempted.

City rip up their midfield

While Pavlovic stayed put, City detonated their own midfield structure in the window just gone.

For weeks, City’s response looked oddly thin. Elliot Anderson arrived from Nottingham for €135 million, a bold and expensive bet, but he stood alone as the only central midfield reinforcement.

The clock ticked. The squad looked light. The pressure grew.

Then came the late surge.

Shortly before the window closed, City moved decisively again: Ayyoub Bouaddi arrived from Lille for €95 million, and Enzo Fernandez joined from Chelsea for €145 million. Three midfielders, €375 million spent, all in central areas.

They rebuilt with money and volume. Just not with the player they first wanted.

Bayern’s homegrown anchor

While City scrambled, Pavlovic stayed rooted in Munich.

A product of Bayern’s academy, he stepped fully into the spotlight last season, making 44 competitive appearances for the club. He chipped in with four goals and two assists, but his value ran far deeper than the numbers: control in possession, composure under pressure, a modern holding midfielder shaped in Bayern’s image.

His rise did not go unnoticed at international level either. Germany handed him his debut in June 2024, and he has already collected 15 caps.

So City move into a new era under Maresca with a radically reshaped midfield and a massive outlay. Bayern, by contrast, keep their homegrown organiser at the base of their structure.

One club paid €375 million to rebuild the middle of the pitch. The other held on to the one midfielder who never even looked at the door.
