Alisson Becker Fined £8,000 for Penalty Controversy

Alisson Becker has been hit with an £8,000 fine by the Football Association after venting his fury at the fourth official’s numbers board in the wake of Liverpool’s controversial penalty concession.

The Liverpool goalkeeper lost his temper at full-time, striking out at the electronic board as he headed towards the tunnel. The FA charged him with misconduct for what it described as “an improper manner around the tunnel area after the final whistle.”

Alisson has accepted the charge and the standard penalty.

His anger stemmed from a late penalty awarded against him for a foul on Neco Williams. The Liverpool keeper was incensed that the spot-kick was given despite the contact coming after Williams had already got his shot away.

To add to the chaos, the build-up to the incident had already been disrupted. The fourth official’s numbers board malfunctioned, delaying a triple substitution that Andoni Iraola was trying to make on the touchline and heightening the sense of confusion.

That sense of injustice has since been backed up. The Key Match Incident (KMI) Panel has ruled that referee Sam Barrott made the wrong decision in awarding the penalty.

The fine stands. So does the frustration.
