Álvarez Rejects Man City Return as Barcelona Dream Faces Atlético Block

Julián Álvarez has shut down the idea of a dramatic return to the Etihad before it ever got off the ground.

According to Cadena SER, Manchester City contacted Atlético Madrid to explore bringing their former striker back to the club. The response was brutal in its simplicity: Álvarez told the Premier League champions he has no intention of returning to Manchester, killing the move before City could even table a formal offer.

The 26-year-old’s stance drops another twist into what has become the defining transfer saga of the summer. Locked in an increasingly tense stand-off with Atlético, Álvarez has also repeatedly rejected Arsenal, despite the London club identifying him as their priority centre-forward and long-term dream signing.

He wants only one move. Barcelona.

Barca saw a €100m (£86m) bid knocked back earlier in the window, but their interest has not cooled. Club president Joan Laporta went public this week, openly acknowledging the chase and describing it as “common knowledge” that the Argentine is determined to join the Catalan side.

That desire is running head-first into Atlético’s hard line. The Madrid club have made it clear they will not strengthen a direct Liga rival and have privately and publicly insisted there is “zero per cent chance” of selling Álvarez to Barcelona.

So he will not go to England. And Atlético will not send him to Catalonia. The gridlock is total.

Álvarez’s refusal to return to the Premier League is understood to be rooted less in football and more in his life off the pitch. He is said to be acutely aware of specific UK visa rules that would make it far harder for his family to visit regularly. In Spain, those complications disappear. For a player in his mid‑twenties, settled on the continent, that matters.

It marks a stark contrast to his first spell in England. City picked him up from River Plate for around £14m in January 2022, a deal that looked a bargain even before he kicked a ball. He delivered, too: 36 goals in 103 appearances, a key supporting role in Pep Guardiola’s historic Treble, and a reputation as one of Europe’s most complete forwards.

Two summers ago, he left for Atlético in an £82m move that underlined his rising status. Now, that same fee and that same status are boxing him in.

Cadena SER report that Álvarez has been repeatedly reminded that Arsenal are, in reality, his only viable escape route from Madrid this summer. The Premier League club are ready, the money is there, and the sporting project is attractive. Still, he is standing firm. His preference is Spain, his obsession is Barcelona.

That leaves him stuck between a club refusing to negotiate with Barça at any price and his own refusal to entertain a return to England.

City have been rebuffed. Barcelona are blocked. Arsenal are ignored. The window ticks on.

Unless something gives – either Atlético softening their stance or Álvarez compromising on his destination – the forward may be left with one option he has tried to avoid all summer: rebuilding bridges in Madrid and facing another season in red and white, while the move he truly wants stays just out of reach.
