Andre Onana Returns to Trabzonspor Amid Premier League Buzz

Andre Onana is heading back to familiar territory, but his name is still being thrown around in Premier League conversations.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper has officially rejoined Trabzonspor on a second consecutive season-long loan for the 2026-27 campaign. There is no option to buy in the deal, so his long-term future remains tied to Manchester United, where his contract runs until June 2028.

Yet while he prepares for another year in Turkey, former South Africa international Quinton Fortune believes Onana’s skill set still fits the demands of England’s elite.

Speaking to Premier Bet, Fortune underlined just how highly he rates the 30-year-old’s distribution, insisting that several top-flight clubs should be circling.

“Andre Onana could be an asset to Chelsea, Newcastle United or Aston Villa in the Premier League,” Fortune said. “You can see the quality for playing out from the back as many managers now want with their style of football, he can be your starting point.”

That is the crux of Fortune’s argument. Modern goalkeepers don’t just save shots; they start attacks. Onana, in his eyes, remains one of the best at it.

“When you’ve got a goalkeeper like Onana who can ping a ball 50, 60 yards to your striker or midfielder and break the lines with his passes, that can make a huge difference, and he’s one of the best at it,” he continued. “He just needs to find his confidence again now because when a goalkeeper makes a mistake unfortunately the whole world sees it. I hope he can get back to his best because when you need a goalkeeper to play out from the back, he can be outstanding.”

For now, that rebuilding of confidence will happen in the Turkish Super Lig. The debate over whether a Premier League club should eventually take a chance on him, though, clearly isn’t going away.

Fortune on Chelsea’s new leaders

Onana wasn’t Fortune’s only talking point. The former Manchester United midfielder also weighed in on Chelsea’s summer business, particularly the arrivals of Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson under Xabi Alonso.

Fortune didn’t hide his disappointment that Welbeck’s return was not to Old Trafford.

“Xabi Alonso made some good signings for Chelsea this summer but I wish we could have seen Danny Welbeck return to Manchester United,” he told Premier Bet.

For Fortune, those two additions say a lot about what Alonso wants to change behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge. After watching Chelsea from afar and drawing on his own experience of big dressing rooms, the South African sees a clear plan.

“By signing Welbeck and Jordan Henderson he wants to bring in some leaders to set good examples which you need at a club like Chelsea, especially after the experience Alonso had at Real Madrid,” he said.

Alonso, Fortune believes, has identified a soft spot in the squad and gone after personalities as much as players.

“He’s looked at the Chelsea dressing room, felt that it was lacking something, and brought in the players with the right personalities and experience to make a difference in Henderson and Welbeck. They are not only top, top players but great professionals too.”
