Anthony Joshua Names Murat Gassiev as Next Opponent if He Defeats Tyson Fury
Anthony Joshua has made it clear who he wants to face next if he comes out on top against Tyson Fury this December. The showdown between Joshua and Fury is set to take place at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on December 11th, an event many regard as the biggest clash in British boxing history.
Over the past decade, attempts to get these two rivals into the ring have fallen through, but now it seems the long-awaited fight will finally happen in Wales. Beyond pride, there’s a chance that the WBA's 'Super' heavyweight championship could be up for grabs in their match. This would mark a unique moment as both fighters currently hold no world titles, which might be the first time this 'Super' belt is contested under such circumstances.
WBA Championship Dispute Involving Murat Gassiev
One heavyweight boxer who might not welcome this fight being for a world title is Russian contender Murat Gassiev. Gassiev claimed the WBA 'Regular' heavyweight title after Oleksandr Usyk vacated all his heavyweight belts in June. He successfully defended his title against Peter Kadiru in July.
Despite rumors that the Fury vs Joshua fight will be for the 'Super' title, the WBA has not officially confirmed this. Meanwhile, Gassiev’s team has protested, demanding the WBA deny reports about the fight's title status and protect Gassiev’s position as the sole recognized heavyweight champion under WBA rules.
John Wirt, Gassiev's co-promoter and legal adviser, stated: "If anyone should be fighting for the WBA Super heavyweight title, it is Murat Gassiev, the reigning champion, not two boxers who currently hold no world title between them."
Joshua's Post-Fight Plans
After the press conference launching the Fury fight, Joshua was asked who he planned to fight next if victorious. His answer was straightforward: "Murat Gassiev."
The WBA mandates that the 'Super' champion must defend their title against the 'Regular' champion. Some fighters vacate titles to avoid certain matchups, so it’s understandable if Joshua or Fury want to sidestep facing Gassiev, who is not as well-known or lucrative to fight compared to Fury.
Still, Joshua appears ready to follow through with his responsibilities if he wins against Fury, a stance that will surely please Team Gassiev.
