Arsenal Targets £50m Deadline Day Signing of Lyon Winger Malick Fofana
Arsenal is considering a late £50 million move to sign Belgian winger Malick Fofana from Lyon ahead of the transfer deadline. Manager Mikel Arteta aims to strengthen his attacking options as the summer window nears its close.
Deadline Day Move in the Works
The Gunners have shown serious interest in securing Fofana, according to reports from Metro. Arsenal’s pursuit has gained momentum with the transfer deadline approaching on Tuesday night.
Arteta wants to add one more attacking player to the squad that won the title last season. This summer, Arsenal already invested heavily by signing Bruno Guimaraes, Ezri Konsa, and Christos Tzolis to reinforce the team.
Lyon Under Pressure to Sell
Lyon’s failure to qualify for the Champions League means they need to raise funds urgently. This situation opens the door for Arsenal to negotiate a £50 million deal. The French club must generate significant income before the transfer window shuts.
"Since Lyon were knocked out of the Champions League play-offs, many players have been put up for sale," European football journalist Andy Brassell told talkSPORT. "They don’t just want to sell; they need to raise about €50 million before the window closes."
Replacing Departing Players
Arteta is searching for another energetic left winger. Although new signing Tzolis has performed well, Arsenal require more cover after selling Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus this summer.
Fofana is highly regarded across Europe and attracted attention from several Premier League clubs including Chelsea, Liverpool, Fulham, and Nottingham Forest earlier this summer. But now, Arsenal has taken the lead in negotiations as intermediaries have approached them to discuss an official offer.
Player Keen on Premier League Switch
Reports from France suggest Fofana is enthusiastic about a move to the Emirates Stadium. He has already spoken directly with Arteta about his potential role with the reigning Premier League champions.
Arsenal’s management will decide soon whether to submit a formal proposal before the Tuesday deadline. Since Lyon has set clear financial expectations, talks could speed up in the hours ahead.
