Arsenal Pursue Alvarez with Gyokeres Swap Proposal

Arsenal are ready to gamble big on their search for a new No.9 – and Viktor Gyokeres could be the collateral.

Mikel Arteta’s side are pushing to land top striking target Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid before the summer window shuts, and a bold swap proposal is now on the table, according to reports in Spain.

Arsenal raise the stakes for Alvarez

Arteta has not hidden his desire for a centre-forward to complete his squad. Alvarez remains the priority, even with continued links to Galatasaray forward Victor Osimhen in the background.

Gyokeres, signed from Sporting for £55 million only last summer, hit 21 goals in all competitions last season. Impressive numbers. But inside Arsenal there is a clear feeling: to go one step further in the Champions League and defend their Premier League crown, they need something even sharper at the tip of the attack.

That is where Alvarez comes in.

The Argentine has made it known that Barcelona is his preferred next move. Atletico, though, do not want to strengthen a direct LaLiga rival and are wary of Barcelona’s ongoing financial issues, which make a £100m-plus deal difficult to pull off.

That stance leaves a gap for Arsenal to drive through.

Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano has already revealed that talks over a potential deal have taken place in London. Now Spanish outlet Diario Sport report that the Premier League champions have escalated their pursuit with a swap proposal involving Gyokeres.

Gyokeres on the line after one season

According to the report, Arsenal are prepared to let the Sweden international leave after just one campaign at the club. The proposed package would see Gyokeres head to Atletico plus around £68.5 million in cash to secure Alvarez.

The same report claims Alvarez’s “head has turned” towards Emirates Stadium, influenced by Atletico’s stance on Barcelona, even if the Catalan club were somehow able to raise the funds.

Financially, the move would be straightforward. Alvarez is expected to double his wages if the two clubs reach an agreement, removing one of the usual obstacles in a deal of this size.

For Arsenal, it would be a ruthless but clear statement: sentiment aside, they believe Alvarez is the upgrade that can tilt the balance in Europe and at home.

‘That little bit of magic’ Arteta still craves

Arsenal opened their Premier League title defence with a commanding 3-0 win over Coventry on Friday night, a performance that underlined the strength of Arteta’s squad but also sharpened the focus on what an elite striker could add.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Gary Neville underlined just how transformative Alvarez could be for Arsenal.

“We think that Alvarez wants to go to Barcelona, but if Arsenal could get Alvarez somehow that is going to light this place up, because then you have a world class striker to go with all the other world class defenders and midfield players,” he said.

“They’d become not just Premier League title winners, but you’re then thinking that they can go that extra step and win the Champions League as well.

“He does need that little bit of magic up front that when you don’t play well they’ll go and win a big game for you.

“Has he got enough of that? I’m not sure.”

The question lingers over Alvarez, but not over Arsenal’s intent. They are prepared to cash in on a 21-goal striker and stack serious money on top to get their man.

Next up, Arsenal travel to Aston Villa on August 31, where Ezri Konsa is set to face his former club. Whether Arteta has Alvarez leading the line by then, or is still pushing pieces around his attacking jigsaw, could shape the entire direction of their season.
