Arsenal's Christos Tzolis: The Left Winger They Need

Arsenal may still be scouring the market for another forward before the window slams shut on September 1, but one prominent voice believes the answer is already in the building.

Carragher hails “what a left winger”

Jamie Carragher watched Arsenal sweep aside Coventry City 3-0 and saw enough. For him, Christos Tzolis isn’t just a promising signing. He’s a solution.

The former Liverpool defender, speaking on Sky Sports after the game, could hardly hide his admiration for the 22-year-old’s Premier League bow, which included a sharp assist for Bukayo Saka.

“Tzolis has been excellent on his Premier League debut. What a left winger Arsenal have got,” Carragher said, summing up a performance that crackled with intent.

Signed for £34m from Club Brugge, Tzolis arrived at the Emirates as Arsenal look to defend their Premier League title and push deeper into the Champions League. Many expected him to be a straight replacement for Leandro Trossard, who departed for Besiktas after playing his part in ending the club’s two-decade wait for a top-flight crown.

Instead, the Greek winger has barged straight through the “squad option” label.

He impressed in pre-season, then backed it up with a fearless display against Manchester City in the Community Shield. The message was clear: he’s not here to make up the numbers.

Arsenal’s search up front – and the case for Tzolis

Arsenal’s recruitment team hasn’t slowed. The club remain active in the market for another left-sided attacker, having been linked earlier in the summer with a bold move for Vinicius Junior before the Brazilian committed his future to Real Madrid.

Attention has since drifted to other high-profile names. Julian Alvarez, Bradley Barcola and Kenan Yildiz have all been mentioned, each one a statement signing that would demand a substantial fee.

Yet as the rumour mill spins, Tzolis is already offering something more concrete: goals and creativity from the very area Arsenal are trying to strengthen. That’s why Carragher’s verdict carries weight. While the club weigh up big-money options, the Greek international is quietly – and now very publicly – staking his claim.

Arteta: “So direct, so incisive”

Mikel Arteta is clearly buying in.

The Arsenal manager, speaking after the win over Coventry, underlined just how quickly Tzolis has connected with the team and the crowd.

“I love that a player that has been with us just for a few weeks gets this kind of energy every time he's on the ball. I think he's earned it,” Arteta said.

“I think the way he has performed in the last few games has been phenomenal. What he transmits as a player is so direct, so incisive, constantly. He wants to make things happen, and he has done an incredible variety of actions in the last 30 metres.

“I think it's up to him to make the right decisions. Even the spaces are sometimes really, really small. I'm very happy with him.

“It was great because the start is always tricky; we played a team that had a long time to prepare as well, and they are really good at what they do, but I've been really impressed with what I have seen so far.”

Those aren’t cautious, bedding-in comments. They’re the words of a manager who sees a player ready to influence a title defence right now.

The window is still open, the links to marquee forwards will keep coming, and Arsenal will keep listening. But with Tzolis already energising the left flank and drawing praise from both pundit and manager, the real question is shifting.

Do Arsenal truly need another left winger as badly as everyone thought?
