Arsenal's Frantic Search for Left Winger After Martinelli's Departure

Arsenal’s search for a new left winger has turned frantic after Gabriel Martinelli’s departure to Al-Hilal – and a bold late enquiry for Marcus Rashford has hit a firm dead end.

The Evening Standard report that Arsenal explored a shock loan move for the Manchester United forward ahead of Tuesday night’s deadline, a move completely separate from their ongoing push to land Julian Alvarez. It was ambitious, opportunistic and, ultimately, unsuccessful.

Rashford has rejected every approach.

At one stage this summer, a permanent exit from Old Trafford looked almost certain. After spending last season on loan at Barcelona and Aston Villa, the 26-year-old appeared to be edging towards a clean break from United. His preference was clear: a return to Catalonia.

Barcelona had a £26 million release clause sitting there in his contract. They walked away from it, choosing instead to bring in Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi. That decision shut one door and forced Rashford’s camp to look around quickly for another.

The interest arrived. So did the rejections.

According to The Times, Champions League side Fenerbahce pushed hard to make Rashford their marquee signing of the window. They were serious, prepared to build their summer story around him. Rashford’s response was just as decisive. He made it clear he had no intention of moving to the Super Lig.

With Europe’s options thinning and his £325,000-a-week wages scaring off many potential bidders, the market around him shrank fast. The financial reality narrowed the field to a handful of clubs; none of them matched his priorities. That shift forced a rethink – not from the clubs, but from the player himself.

So the narrative flipped. Instead of forcing his way out, Rashford is now staying put.

United, for their part, are content with that outcome. An academy graduate with his pedigree is not an asset they are desperate to discard, especially once the internal dynamics began to change.

At the heart of that change: Michael Carrick.

The relationship between head coach and forward has become the key factor in Rashford’s U-turn. After returning to the fold, Rashford featured in the defeat to Hull City, coming on at half-time for Patrick Dorgu. It was a small moment on the pitch, but a significant one inside the club.

Carrick has been struck by what he has seen behind the scenes. Speaking about Rashford’s recent work, he said: "It's been pretty obvious since Marcus came back training with Kobbie [Mainoo] and Licha [Martinez] pretty much in Dublin that he's come back fantastically well, you know."

That endorsement matters. It has effectively pulled Rashford back into the core of the first-team group, not as a wantaway star being managed out, but as a player being trusted again.

While United settle around that new reality, Arsenal are left scrambling.

Martinelli’s exit has ripped a hole on the left flank and the window shuts on Tuesday night. The failed move for Rashford underlines just how narrow the market is at elite level, especially this late. Arsenal must now pivot quickly, with Alvarez still a target but time and options draining away.

Rashford, meanwhile, has a different kind of deadline in front of him.

United host Ipswich Town on Sunday, and the match is set to carry a personal weight that goes beyond three points. If selected, it will be Rashford’s first appearance at Old Trafford since December 2024 – a return not just to a stadium, but to a stage where he once looked destined to leave for good.

Now the question is no longer where he goes next. It’s whether he can make this second act at Manchester United count.
