Arsenal Poised for Julian Alvarez as Atletico Shuts Barcelona Door

Arsenal are lurking in the shadows of one of the summer’s most combustible transfer sagas – and Fabrizio Romano insists the London club are far closer to the action than many believe.

Julian Alvarez has spent the entire window pushing for Barcelona. That has strained his relationship with Atletico Madrid and a fanbase that has grown increasingly tired of the noise. But the club’s hierarchy has now gone beyond frustration. It has drawn a line.

Atletico’s stance: Barcelona? Never

On Thursday, Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin delivered one of the most explosive public statements of the window, making it crystal clear that Barcelona will not get their man while he remains in charge.

“The truth is that it outrages us even more; we are repulsed by the dishonesty, the lack of ethics, transparency and professionalism, and we can only insist that we will not negotiate with Barcelona under any circumstances,” Gil Marin said.

He doubled down, stressing the unity inside the club over the decision.

“I have the support of everyone working with me, from shareholders to directors, and the only certain and firm decision is that we will not negotiate with Barcelona under any circumstances. You have my word – the player [Alvarez] will most certainly not be transferred to Barcelona.”

That message, delivered again after the Champions League draw, was not limited to this window. Gil Marin made it clear his resistance to selling Alvarez to Barcelona extends for as long as he is CEO.

Arsenal wait – but not passively

Into that deadlock steps Arsenal. Or rather, they stand just behind the door, waiting for Alvarez to turn the handle.

Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, was adamant that the Gunners’ interest is not a sideshow.

“I know I’ve been on this one for a few days and many of you don’t believe it but I keep telling you that Arsenal are there for Julian Alvarez. Arsenal are there. Arsenal are waiting. Arsenal have their own strategy, I think it’s a real strategy,” he said.

This is not, he stressed, a case of simply monitoring the situation from afar.

“It’s not that Arsenal are just there looking at the situation. Arsenal are in the background because obviously Arsenal need to respect the player, his family, his agents, the player decides. So Arsenal can only wait but at the same time, while they are waiting and while they are in the background, Arsenal are active in the conversations.”

According to Romano, Arsenal have already informed Atletico Madrid that they are ready to do business and try to reach an agreement if the door opens.

The Martinelli factor and financial firepower

The London club’s position has been strengthened by the sale of Gabriel Martinelli. The final fee is still to be confirmed, but Romano says Arsenal expect a figure between £50m and £60m.

“And, financially, selling Gabriel Martinell, we will see the final fee, if it’s 50, 55, 60 but we are between 50 and 60 million pounds. This extra money after all the extra money generated by Arsenal in the recent months gives Arsenal space to make business for Julian Alvarez,” Romano explained.

That cash, combined with previous income, gives Arsenal room to move if Alvarez finally accepts that Barcelona is closed off to him.

“So Arsenal will be ready to sit at the table with Atletico Madrid and to reach an agreement. Now they are waiting on Julian and any moment, when it’s just four or five days to go, any moment could be the moment.”

The clock is ticking. The market is chaotic. But as Romano pointed out, this is still “real people in real life”, not just a board game.

“If at any moment Julian Alvarez or his agent call Arsenal to tell them ‘okay we want to come because there is no other way’ Arsenal will be ready. So get ready for this scenario because it’s not impossible. Arsenal are there for Julian and we have to follow the situation but this depends on the player.”

Player’s dream vs club’s reality

Up to “today, tonight, the recent hours”, as Romano put it, Alvarez has been unwavering.

“Julian always said only Barcelona, ‘I want Barcelona, my dream is Barcelona’ but Arsenal keep waiting and remain on their position.”

That dream now collides with Atletico’s hard line. Gil Marin’s message leaves Alvarez with a stark choice: accept staying in Madrid, or accept that if he wants out, it will not be to Barcelona.

Romano underlined how blunt Atletico’s internal message has become.

“When it’s talking about other clubs he said ‘if he doesn’t want to stay in Madrid, no to Barcelona, but we are open to finding a solution’.”

The subtext is barely subtext at all.

“Guys, the message from Atletico Madrid is very clear: if Julian wants to go to Arsenal please go. You are free to go,” Romano said.

Atletico would prefer to keep him. They “would love to continue with Julian to have a new chance to continue together.” But they also know that if he insists on leaving, Arsenal are positioned as the viable escape route.

So the decision lands squarely on Alvarez’s shoulders.

“So, it’s on Julian to decide what he wants to do. Let’s see because this Arsenal scenario should not be underestimated,” Romano concluded.

Barcelona is blocked. Arsenal are ready. The window is closing. How long can Alvarez hold out for a move that Atletico say will never happen?
