Arsenal’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez ended in frustration this summer – and Steven Gerrard could not be happier about it.

"I'm just glad he didn't go to Arsenal, I'll just leave that one there!"

Gerrard’s words cut to the heart of the issue. Atletico protected their own ambitions by refusing to empower a direct rival, whether in La Liga or Europe, and in the process denied Arsenal a marquee forward widely regarded as one of the most coveted attackers in the game.
