Arsenal Considers Loan for Marcus Rashford Amid Martinelli Uncertainty

Arsenal are considering a late move for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford as uncertainty grows over Gabriel Martinelli’s future and the clock ticks down on the transfer window.

With Martinelli strongly linked with a £50 million switch to Al-Hilal, senior figures at Arsenal are said to be privately surprised that the Brazilian could be allowed to leave without a replacement already lined up. That concern has pushed Rashford’s name back into the conversation at London Colney.

Rashford back in the frame

Rashford looked destined for the Old Trafford exit earlier in the summer. His future appeared to lie away from Manchester after a difficult spell, but Michael Carrick dragged him back into the fold during pre-season and has been publicly positive about the 28-year-old’s response, saying he has been “delighted” with Rashford since his return.

The England international, who naturally operates off the left, spent last season on loan at Barcelona. The Catalan club chose not to trigger a £26 million purchase clause, sending him back to United with two years still to run on his contract. Carrick has reiterated that Rashford is a United player for this season, a stance that complicates any late-window move.

Even so, Arsenal are understood to be exploring the possibility of a loan rather than a permanent deal, sensing an opportunity as they scramble for cover on the left flank.

Rashford could even feature for United against Ipswich this weekend, underlining how quickly any negotiations would need to move if Arsenal decide to act.

Alvarez pursuit hits resistance

Rashford is not the only name on Arsenal’s attacking shortlist. Their primary target remains Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid, but that chase has turned into a slog.

When asked directly about talks with Alvarez, Mikel Arteta shut the line of questioning down with a sharp “Don’t go there,” a clear sign of how delicate – and perhaps frustrating – the situation has become for Arsenal.

Alvarez, currently sidelined from Atletico’s weekend squad after missing training through illness, has been keen on a move to Barcelona this summer. Atletico, though, have drawn a hard line. The Spanish club released a pointed statement confirming their refusal to negotiate with Barcelona over the forward.

“The members of Atletico Madrid's Board of Directors have unanimously expressed their full support for the club's decision not to negotiate the transfer of Julian Alvarez to FC Barcelona,” the statement read.

“Atletico Madrid is open to negotiations that are part of the transfer market, but always in an ethical and professional manner and with respect between clubs. We fully support the position previously communicated by the club that FC Barcelona have not met these requirements and, as a result, there have been no negotiations, nor will there be any negotiations with them regarding the transfer of Julián Alvarez.”

Arsenal, according to reports, retain a strong interest in the Argentinian. But they will only push ahead if they are convinced of his full commitment to joining them, and with Barcelona still in his sights, that assurance has not yet arrived.

Late-window tension at the Emirates

So Arsenal find themselves in a familiar late-August bind: a key attacker potentially heading out, preferred target tangled in politics and preference, and the market thinning by the day.

If Martinelli does go and Alvarez remains out of reach, the pressure to act will only intensify. A loan move for Rashford – a proven Premier League forward, rejuvenated in pre-season and capable of stepping straight into the left-sided role – suddenly looks less like a fantasy and more like a pragmatic, if complicated, solution.

The question now is simple: with days left and options narrowing, do Arsenal gamble on forcing open Old Trafford’s door, or risk stepping into the season light in one of their most important positions?
