Arsenal Faces Defining Call Over Martin Zubimendi Transfer
Arsenal find themselves staring at one of the defining calls of their summer – and it involves one of Mikel Arteta’s most trusted midfield generals.
Real Madrid have come back for Martin Zubimendi.
Mourinho pushes, Madrid move
Los Blancos have officially reignited their pursuit of the Spanish international, with TEAMtalk reporting that José Mourinho has given a firm green light to the move. The Portuguese coach, never shy about demanding exactly what he wants, sees the 27-year-old as the ideal anchor to reinforce his holding midfield.
Initial contact has already been made over what would be a blockbuster transfer. Zubimendi’s camp, according to the same report, have signalled that the player is highly interested in the chance to return to Spain and wear the white shirt of Madrid.
That interest changes the temperature of the whole saga. This is no longer just Madrid testing the water. The player is listening.
Arsenal’s dilemma: depth vs. dominance
Arsenal are not actively pushing Zubimendi towards the exit. Far from it. But the stance emerging from north London is clear: the right offer would at least be considered.
That line is complicated by conflicting reports over how open the club really are. The Sun claim Arteta is desperate to keep the midfielder and will only entertain a truly exceptional bid. Anything less, and Arsenal shut the door.
The tension lies with the player’s own ambitions. If Zubimendi pushes hard for a lucrative move to the Bernabeu, Arteta will be forced into the kind of decision that can reshape a dressing room. Keep an unsettled key man, or cash in while his stock is high?
His importance is not in doubt. Zubimendi played a crucial role in Arsenal’s stunning Premier League title triumph last season, anchoring a side that finally went the distance. Yet his place in the starting XI is no longer guaranteed.
The reason is simple and expensive: Bruno Guimaraes. The £75 million signing from Newcastle United has walked straight into the heart of Arteta’s plans, adding another heavyweight name to an already stacked midfield.
- Declan Rice.
- Martin Odegaard.
- Mikel Merino.
- Guimaraes.
- Zubimendi.
Five players of genuine elite quality, all fighting for three spots in the centre of the pitch. It is the kind of depth title contenders crave, but it also creates brutal selection calls.
Letting a World Cup winner walk away after just one season, though, would be a huge gamble for a team defending their crown.
Madrid’s need for control
Madrid’s renewed push for Zubimendi follows their failure to land Rodri, a long-term target for the Spanish giants. Mourinho wants more authority in midfield, more control, more bite. Zubimendi fits that profile perfectly.
His importance to Madrid’s planning could grow even further if Eduardo Camavinga leaves the Santiago Bernabeu. That potential departure would open a clear lane for Zubimendi to become central to Mourinho’s new structure.
From Madrid’s side, this feels like an opportunity that wasn’t expected to appear: an established Premier League champion, Spanish, in his prime, and open to coming home.
Arsenal hold the cards – for now
What Madrid want and what Arsenal will accept are very different things.
Financially, the Gunners are under no pressure. Zubimendi is tied to a lucrative long-term contract, giving the club full control over his immediate future and any negotiations that follow. There is no need to accept a cut-price offer, no looming deadline forcing their hand.
Arsenal are not in a rebuild. They are defending a Premier League title and chasing Champions League glory with real intent. Selling a core squad member purely because the depth chart looks crowded would run directly against those ambitions.
For Madrid to change that calculation, they will have to go big. Very big.
Any bid will need to come in well above Arsenal’s original outlay to even start the conversation. Los Blancos must put something on the table that makes the risk feel worth it for a club trying to stay at the very top.
Until that happens, Arsenal’s priority is simple: keep Zubimendi, keep control of their midfield, and keep their title defence on track.
The next move belongs to Madrid.
