Manchester City Consider Late Move for Enzo Fernandez
Manchester City are still weighing up a late move for Enzo Fernandez as the transfer window heads into its final fortnight, with the Premier League champions yet to decide whether to test Chelsea’s resolve before the September 1 deadline.
They had the chance to strike earlier. They chose not to.
Chelsea had set an internal cut-off last week for any club willing to meet the £120m terms agreed with Fernandez’s camp back in May. That deadline passed at 5pm on Friday without an offer from City, meaning the Argentina midfielder can no longer leave Stamford Bridge under those previously agreed conditions, even though the wider transfer window remains open until the end of the month.
So if City come now, they come on Chelsea’s terms.
Fernandez under scrutiny at Stamford Bridge
The tension around Fernandez’s future was laid bare on Saturday. Introduced during Chelsea’s 3-1 friendly win over Real Sociedad, the 23-year-old was met with boos from sections of the home crowd, a pointed reaction to a saga that has rumbled on since last season.
Chelsea suspended him for two matches towards the end of the last campaign after he cast doubt on his long-term future while away with Argentina. Those comments landed in the middle of strong links to Real Madrid, only for the Spanish giants to publicly rule out a move in an official club statement in early July.
Madrid stepped away. City have not – at least not yet.
The question now is whether Pep Guardiola’s side, reshaping their midfield in dramatic fashion this summer, are prepared to go close to Chelsea’s £120m valuation in the final stretch of the window.
City rebuild midfield as Rodri exits
While Fernandez sits in limbo, City’s midfield is being ripped up and redrawn.
Talks continue with Lille over Morocco international Ayyoub Bouaddi, with the French club understood to want around £85m for the 20-year-old. Their head coach, Davide Ancelotti, confirmed over the weekend that negotiations with City are active, underlining how serious the Premier League champions are about the deal.
Bouaddi is only one piece of the puzzle. City are also preparing for life without two pillars of their recent success.
Tijjani Reijnders is set to join Saudi Arabian side Al Qadsiah in a deal worth around £51m, cutting short his stay in Manchester. The bigger shock, though, is Rodri’s departure.
The Spain World Cup winner is set to undergo his medical at Barcelona ahead of a £65.4m move from the Etihad. The 30-year-old, a former Ballon d’Or holder and the heartbeat of City’s midfield during a run that brought four Premier League titles and a Champions League crown, is expected to sign a four-year contract at Camp Nou.
City wanted him to stay. They tried to extend his deal, with one year left on his contract. Barcelona’s third bid changed the picture, an offer City ultimately decided they could not refuse.
One of the best midfielders of his generation is walking out of the door. No wonder City are looking hard at Fernandez and pushing on with Bouaddi.
Why is Fernandez valued so highly?
Rodri’s agreed £65.4m fee has inevitably sharpened the focus on Chelsea’s £120m valuation of Fernandez. On the pitch, Rodri is a four-time Premier League champion and was named player of the tournament at the World Cup with Spain. Fernandez, by contrast, is yet to dominate English football in the same way.
So why the gap?
Clubs and analysts point to a familiar cluster of factors. Age and potential. Contract length and bargaining power. Recent form and the financial strength of the selling club. Fernandez is younger, tied to a long contract at a club that does not need to sell. That combination drives the number up.
City know all of this. They also know the clock is ticking.
With Rodri heading to Barcelona, Reijnders bound for Saudi Arabia and Bouaddi negotiations ongoing, the European champions are juggling timelines and price tags. The decision they make on Fernandez in the next two weeks will say a lot about how bold they plan to be in defending their Premier League crown.
