Arsenal's Midfield Depth: Mikel Merino's Praise for New Signing

Mikel Merino looked around Arsenal’s midfield and could only shake his head.

“Honestly, it’s unreal. Probably the best midfield in football,” the World Cup winner said, still sounding slightly in awe of the options Mikel Arteta now has at his disposal.

He wasn’t exaggerating the depth. He was revelling in it.

“The amount of quality that we have there, with every player that can come on the pitch and make a good shift. It’s great,” he added. “That’s good for the team. That’s good for the squad. It raises everyone’s level because if you have a bad day, the one that is close to you is going to do a great job.”

Competition is not a problem at London Colney. It is the fuel.

A new arrival, instant impact

Merino’s excitement spiked when the conversation turned to Arsenal’s latest midfield recruit, a Brazilian who has arrived from Newcastle with a reputation already forged in the Premier League.

“Amazing signing,” Merino said. “He has proved throughout these years how good he is at Newcastle. And he showed it today again.

“A lot of composure, technical ability, a lot of defensive effort as well. So it’s a very good signing. A top player, but we have many of those in this team. So everyone that comes to help the team is welcome.”

The Brazilian wasted no time pulling on an Arsenal shirt, making his first appearance in a pre-season game against Italian side Como. No gentle easing in, no waiting for the perfect moment. He wanted the ball, the noise, the responsibility.

Arteta, usually cautious with new arrivals, could feel that urgency from the first days on the training ground.

“He's only had three training sessions, but he looked good. He was really pushing to play some minutes today,” the Arsenal manager told reporters. “He wanted to get his debut and the feeling of playing in front of our fans immediately. You sense it immediately. I believe there's a strong connection at play and that is going to make us better.”

Three sessions. One appearance. A clear message: he is here to compete, not just to blend in.

Hunger that doesn’t fade

Arsenal’s recent success has not softened the dressing room. If anything, Merino insists, it has sharpened the edge.

“I think we have an amazing squad. The hunger is still there. Not because we won it last season, we’re going to be happy with it,” he said. “We want more and more and more and we want every trophy possible.”

That repetition was deliberate. More. And then more again.

“That’s the best quality of this team,” Merino continued. “Not only the amount of depth that we have, the quality that we have in every position, but that hunger.”

Depth, quality, and a refusal to stand still. With a midfield he calls “probably the best in football” and a new Brazilian signing already demanding minutes, Arsenal are not talking like a team satisfied with what they’ve done.

They are talking like a team obsessed with what comes next.
