Arsenal move to poach Liverpool starlet Vincent Joseph in academy blow for Reds

Liverpool have grown used to raiding other clubs’ youth systems for the best emerging talent in Britain. This time, the roles are reversed.

Harvey Elliott from Fulham, Ben Gannon-Doak from Celtic, Trey Nyoni from Leicester, Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea – Anfield has become a magnet for gifted teenagers in recent years, with Liverpool’s recruitment team building a reputation for spotting the next wave early.

Now Arsenal are closing in on one of Liverpool’s own.

Arsenal strike agreement for Joseph

According to The Athletic, Arsenal have reached an agreement with Liverpool academy striker Vincent Joseph over a move to north London, with talks ongoing between the clubs over a compensation fee for the 16-year-old.

Because Joseph is under 24 and has not signed professional terms, any switch triggers the usual system: if the clubs cannot settle on a figure, a tribunal will step in and set the amount owed to Liverpool.

Joseph’s schoolboy registration at Liverpool expired this summer. Crucially, he did not sign scholarship terms with the club, opening the door for Arsenal to make their move.

The Gunners have stepped through it.

A prolific record at youth level

Liverpool’s academy staff and supporters will feel this one. Joseph’s numbers at youth level suggest a forward with serious potential.

He scored three goals in just two appearances in the Under-18 Premier League last season, a small sample but a sharp return. On the international stage, he has eight goals in nine caps for England under-16s, including a hat-trick against the Netherlands under-16s last December, as recorded by Transfermarkt.

Those are the kind of figures that turn a promising youngster into a priority target.

Liverpool have been quick to tie down other prospects, offering professional deals to players such as Lucas Clarke. With Joseph, though, they have not managed to get an agreement over the line. Arsenal have sensed the opportunity and moved decisively.

Tables turned after Ngumoha deal

There is a familiar symmetry to all this. Liverpool recently swooped for Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea’s academy shortly after his 16th birthday, with that fee also heading for a tribunal decision.

Now Arsenal are set to do to Liverpool what Liverpool did to Chelsea.

For the Reds, it stings. Losing a highly rated teenager to a direct domestic rival is one thing; losing one whose goals have already caught the eye at club and international level is another.

For Arsenal, it is a statement at youth level – a sign they are ready to compete aggressively for the same talent pool Liverpool have mined so successfully.

Joseph’s next steps will unfold away from Merseyside. The question now is whether Liverpool’s famed academy conveyor belt can keep rolling smoothly when others start lifting the pieces off it.
