Arsenal's Pursuit of Julian Alvarez Amid Vinicius Junior's Commitment

Vinicius Junior was never really coming. Not to Arsenal, not to the Premier League. Not this summer.

As the Brazilian star edged into the final 12 months of his previous deal at Santiago Bernabeu, the noise started. His camp were reported to be testing the waters across Europe and in Saudi Arabia, where the money is heavy and the pitches are now dotted with familiar faces like Cristiano Ronaldo.

For a moment, it felt plausible. A 26-year-old ‘Galactico’, a recent Ballon d’Or contender, still churning out elite numbers for Real Madrid and terrorising full-backs on a weekly basis. Arsenal had just moved on from Leandro Trossard and were preparing to cash in on Gabriel Martinelli. The left flank looked like a vacancy waiting for a superstar.

Christos Tzolis has settled quickly since arriving in north London, his previous Premier League stint at Norwich helping smooth the transition, but Vinicius would have been a different level of statement. A marquee signing for Mikel Arteta. The sort of transfer that shifts a title race before a ball is even kicked.

It never got that far.

Instead, Vinicius signed fresh terms at Real Madrid, committing his future to the Bernabeu until 2032. The rumours, it turns out, were doing more work at the negotiating table than on any recruitment whiteboard.

Gareth Barry, speaking to GOAL on behalf of BetVictor Online Casino, did not buy the idea that the Premier League was genuinely close.

“I was buzzing to see Vinicius Junior linked with the Premier League. It would have been great to see him over here,” he said, before cutting to the heart of it.

“From afar, it seemed like a classic agent's tactic, if they were in negotiations, bringing in another massive club would obviously pique interest and help get that contract spiced up to meet demands before signing. It was classic agent play, personally.

“At the same time, it would have been great to see him in the Premier League, as he's one of the world's stars at the moment.”

So Arsenal move on, with their left side reshaped but not revolutionised, and their attention drifting back towards La Liga for a different kind of opportunity.

Alvarez noise grows as window ticks down

While Vinicius is locked in at Madrid for the long haul, another South American forward is at the centre of a very different story. Julian Alvarez, a World Cup winner with Argentina and already familiar with English football from his time at Manchester City, is understood to be pushing for a way out of Atletico Madrid.

The links to Arsenal have surfaced quickly. A player with relentless work rate, proven at Premier League level, potentially on the move at a time when top clubs are still fine-tuning their squads.

Barry, whose all-time Premier League appearance record was overtaken by James Milner last season, admits Alvarez’s situation caught his eye.

“I was surprised to see that Julian Alvarez wants to leave Atletico, but I understand why they'll keep him. He's a great player, his work rate's incredible,” he said.

“He'd be a great team-mate, I'm sure, to play alongside. I was surprised by the links with Arsenal. I think it's probably similar to what they've already got.

“I'm not sure they would have needed him, but there would definitely be interest from other Premier League clubs. But yeah, I think if [Diego] Simeone is that strong on keeping him, I'm sure he'll stay for another year at least.”

Barcelona lurking, Arsenal watching

Barcelona are there too, watching the situation and weighing their options. Short on central striking depth and in need of a reliable focal point, they have been sniffing around Alvarez as a possible answer.

Their problem is familiar and financial. The reigning champions of Spain have been wrestling with tight budgets for several windows, and finding the cash to prise Alvarez away from Atletico is far from straightforward. That financial strain could leave a gap for a club like Arsenal, should they decide the fit is right and the price is manageable.

For now, it remains a story of possibilities rather than bids. Arsenal have already started the defence of their Premier League crown with authority, brushing aside Coventry in a comfortable opening win to launch the 2026-27 campaign. The squad looks strong, the system well-drilled, the ambition obvious.

But the calendar has its own pressure. The transfer window runs until September 1. That is the real deadline, the line in the sand for any late move, whether opportunistic or carefully planned.

Vinicius Junior will not be walking through the doors at London Colney. That fantasy has been shelved until at least the next round of contract games. Alvarez, though, is different. His future is still in play, his name still circling the rumour mill.
