Arsenal Complete £75 Million Signing of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle

Premier League champions Arsenal have finalized the acquisition of Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes for a fee reported around £75 million ($101.2 million), according to announcements from both clubs on Saturday.

The Brazilian midfielder, who spent four and a half seasons with Newcastle, has committed to a long-term deal with the Gunners, fresh off their first English top-flight league title in 22 years.

At 28 years old, Guimaraes stands as Arsenal’s most prominent signing this transfer window, joining recent additions Illan Meslier and Christos Tzolis at Emirates Stadium.

Strengthening the Midfield Core

"With Bruno joining us, we are further strengthening the heart of our team," said Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta. "Bruno can operate as a defensive midfielder and box-to-box player. He blends quality and endurance, consistently contributing goals and assists every season."

Berta added that Guimaraes will help manager Mikel Arteta refine the team's playing style and boost internal competition, which is vital for sustaining performance levels needed to compete for major trophies.

Transfer Details and Career Highlights

The exact transfer fee was not officially disclosed, but Newcastle confirmed it ranks among the top ten highest fees ever received for a player aged 28 or older. Guimaraes had previously been linked with Arsenal during January 2022, before moving from Lyon to Newcastle.

His arrival reunites him with Mikel Arteta at Arsenal after scoring 31 goals in 195 appearances for the Magpies. Under Eddie Howe’s management, Guimaraes played a key role in ending Newcastle’s 54-year wait for a major trophy by winning the 2023 League Cup.

"This is one of the toughest decisions of my life," Guimaraes said in a statement from Newcastle. "When I arrived, the club was in a difficult spot, and I'm very proud of what we accomplished together. I truly fell in love with this place."

Eddie Howe recently stepped down as Newcastle manager and was replaced by German coach Matthias Jaissle.

Competition and Upcoming Fixtures

Guimaraes, who represented Brazil at the recent World Cup, will compete for midfield spots alongside Declan Rice, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Martin Zubimendi, and Mikel Merino at Arsenal.

Arsenal begin their season against Manchester City in the Community Shield next Sunday, followed by their Premier League title defense against newly promoted Coventry five days later.

Newcastle open their campaign facing Liverpool at St James' Park on August 23.
