Arsenal Sign Young Winger Sam Scanlon from Manchester United

Arsenal are set to raid Manchester United’s academy again, with 19-year-old winger Sam Scanlon closing in on a move to north London as part of the club’s aggressive rebuild at Under-21 level.

The Gunners have targeted the teenager, who joined United in 2021, as they continue to sharpen the pathway between their youth ranks and Mikel Arteta’s first team. Scanlon has completed his medical and, barring late drama, the deal between the clubs is expected to be wrapped up within the next 48 hours.

It will be a free transfer, but not a clean break. United have secured a 40 per cent sell-on clause, a clear sign they believe there is value still to come from a player they are allowing to leave without a fee.

No loan, no half-measures

Arsenal do not plan to send Scanlon straight back out on loan. He will start with the Under-21s, but the message around the move is clear: this is not a parking job.

The Gibraltar international has joined with the intention of forcing his way into Arteta’s thoughts as quickly as he can. That ambition is backed by experience that belies his age. Scanlon has already been capped 24 times at senior level by Gibraltar, exposure that has put him on radars across Europe, particularly in Spain.

Sevilla pushed hard for him in January and wanted a permanent deal. United resisted and instead sent him to Swindon Town for the second half of last season, preferring a loan to the English lower leagues over an early sale abroad.

Now Arsenal have stepped in.

Familiar faces and trusted voices

Inside London Colney, there is no mystery about what Scanlon brings.

New Under-21 head coach David Horseman worked with the winger briefly at United and strongly recommended him to Arsenal’s hierarchy. His endorsement has been backed up by Chris Perkins, who oversaw academy recruitment at Derby County when Scanlon was emerging through their age groups before his move to Old Trafford.

Those internal references have carried weight. Arsenal’s academy structure has been under review, and the club has moved decisively this summer to raise the standard and depth of the Under-21 squad.

Scanlon will not be walking that path alone. He follows defender Habeeb Ogunneye in making the switch from United to Arsenal, another free transfer built around a significant sell-on clause. The pattern is obvious: low-cost, high-upside talent, with future value protected.

A new edge to Arsenal’s youth drive

There has been a clear reset in Arsenal’s approach beneath the first team. The club want a stronger, more competitive Under-21 group that can both challenge for honours at that level and feed directly into Arteta’s senior squad.

That intent was underlined again this week when 18-year-old striker Igor Tyjon confirmed he will be leaving Blackburn Rovers after Arsenal finally secured his signature.
