Arsenal Targets Konsa Amid Saliba Injury Concerns

Arsenal’s summer plan has been built on refinement, not overhaul. William Saliba’s back, and the sight of him limping out of France’s World Cup semi-final defeat, has jolted that script.

The club are waiting on full medical assessments before deciding whether their defensive lynchpin needs a spell on the sidelines. At 25, Saliba is entering his prime and central to everything Mikel Arteta wants from his back line: calm on the ball, aggressive without it, almost ever-present. Ezri Konsa has re-emerged as a serious option. The Guardian report that Arsenal have formally expressed interest in the Aston Villa and England defender, a player whose stock has risen sharply under Unai Emery.

Konsa brings Premier League experience, positional versatility across the back line and the composure to play in a high defensive line. For a club that lived through the impact of Saliba’s previous back issues on a title race, the logic is brutal and simple: they cannot afford to be light at centre-half again.

The move would not be straightforward. Villa, now an established top-six contender, are under no pressure to sell and have already shown they are prepared to hold firm on key assets. But Arsenal’s interest is real, and it speaks to a shift from luxury signings to insurance policies of the highest quality.

Rogers pursuit gathers pace

Konsa is not the only Villa player in Arsenal’s sights. Morgan Rogers, his club and international team-mate, is also expected to be the subject of a formal offer.

The 23-year-old attacker has been on Arsenal’s list for a long time and, with his World Cup involvement winding down, the London club are said to be preparing a bid. Rogers offers flexibility across the frontline and attacking midfield – exactly the sort of profile Arsenal have leaned towards under Arteta, capable of rotating across positions without disrupting the system.

Tzolis deal edging closer

On the flanks, Arsenal’s work is more advanced. A deal is in place with Club Brugge for winger Cristos Tzolis, with the move to the Emirates described as close.

Tzolis would add another direct, wide threat to an attack already loaded with technical quality but always searching for fresh angles and competition. Arsenal’s recruitment has consistently targeted players who can press, carry the ball and score; the Greek winger fits that mould.

Barcelona’s Alvarez push complicates attacking plans

Arsenal’s ambitions are not confined to wide areas. Their long-standing admiration for Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez is no secret, but the race has heavyweight company.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has again gone public with his desire to bring Alvarez to Camp Nou, underlining Barça’s intent to compete hard for the Argentine. While Arsenal weigh up a move for Konsa and line up Rogers, Aston Villa are busy on their own front. They are close to confirming the signing of Joao Gomes from Wolves in a deal worth around £38m, a move that would strengthen Emery’s midfield options with energy and bite.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Villa have also agreed personal terms with AC Milan left-back Pervis Estupinan. That step suggests Emery is pushing to deepen his options on the left, even before a fee is finalised between the clubs.

For Villa, it is a balancing act: build a squad for Champions League-level demands while fending off interest in the very players who powered them there.

Forest and Newcastle move to fill key gaps

Away from north London and the Midlands, Nottingham Forest are preparing a bold swing of their own. BBC Sport report that Forest are set to launch a £45m bid for Spurs midfielder Lucas Bergvall after seeing an earlier offer rejected for the Sweden international. The club still want to bring in another midfielder alongside Bergvall, underlining just how aggressively they intend to reshape the centre of the pitch.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are focusing on the last line of defence. The Daily Mail say the club are in talks over deals for two goalkeepers: Brighton’s Carl Rushworth and Manchester City’s James Trafford. Two young, homegrown options, both with high ceilings, both capable of pushing for the No 1 shirt in the medium term.

Back at Arsenal, everything loops back to Saliba. If his back clears and he returns unscathed, Konsa might be a luxury. If the news is less kind, that interest quickly becomes a priority.
