Arsenal's Title Defence: Ezri Konsa Joins the Champions

Arsenal’s title defence has barely begun, and already there’s a new face at the heart of it.

Ezri Konsa walked into the Emirates Stadium last week as the latest statement signing of the champions, a £55m arrival from Aston Villa and a defender trusted enough to have gone to a World Cup under Thomas Tuchel. At 28, he has signed a four-year deal and steps into a dressing room that smells of fresh success and sharpened ambition.

Arsenal ended a 22-year wait for the Premier League trophy last season. They opened this campaign by swatting aside Coventry City 3-0, a performance that looked less like a curtain-raiser and more like a continuation. Now comes a twist: Konsa’s first competitive appearance for his new club is likely to come at his old home, Villa Park, on Monday night.

Madueke’s influence and a reunion in red

Behind the transfer, there was a familiar voice in Konsa’s ear. Noni Madueke, a team-mate with England and now at Arsenal, made sure his friend knew exactly what awaited him in north London.

"Ezri is a great friend of mine first and foremost," Madueke told the club’s website. "We’ve played with each other for England now for a couple of years."

The winger could barely hide his excitement at the move.

"I’m delighted that he’s here, he’s a great player and I know he’s going to be a great addition, not only to the team but around the building," he said. "I can’t wait to see what we’re going to achieve together. It’s a great club, a great environment and I was saying [to Ezri Konsa] before he signed, it’s the best place that he could’ve chosen."

For Konsa, the pitch is familiar. The surroundings on Monday will not be. He returns as a champion, expected to strengthen a back line that now carries the burden of defending a title, not chasing one.

A squad that expects a fight every week

Madueke knows exactly what Konsa is stepping into. Under Mikel Arteta, competition has become part of the club’s identity.

"You know that you’re fighting for places every week, on a game-to-game basis," he said. "You know that you’ve got an amazing squad that has the ability to fight on all front.

"We’ve got a squad full of internationals, top players, and that’s exactly what we need."

This is the reality of Arsenal now: a squad stacked with players used to the international stage, a group that expects to go deep in every competition. Konsa hasn’t just joined a title-winning side; he has joined a team that believes last season was only the start.

A different mood around the Emirates

The shift in atmosphere is obvious to those inside the camp. The Community Shield win over Manchester City only underlined it.

Madueke spoke of a group unshackled. "I feel like everyone’s [more free], everyone’s more relaxed, it’s good," he admitted. "[City] beat us twice last season, so it was a great feeling to beat them and win the first trophy of the season, it sets the tone."

The tone, clearly, is not one of satisfaction. It is of intent.

"We definitely have the feeling, obviously it was great to win the league after 22 years, it’s some feat," Madueke said. "We’re back here with the same mindset to go and do it again, and even to improve on what we did last year."

The first league outing backed up that talk. Coventry were swept aside, but it was the noise that lingered.

"Then the atmosphere against Coventry was great," Madueke added. "I think there’s an extra buzz around the place now that we’re champions. It was a great performance from us as well, a great start to the season, so all in all, I think everyone’s really happy at the moment and the mood’s really good."

Happy, but not complacent. Not with Villa next.

Villa Park, Emery, and a harsh reminder

On paper, this looks like a good time to face Aston Villa. Unai Emery has lost Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Martinez, Ollie Watkins and Konsa in a brutal summer window. The season started with a 4-0 hammering by Brighton.

Yet nobody at Arsenal is treating this as a formality. Certainly not Madueke.

"Any Unai Emery team, you’ve got to be aware of," he warned. "He’s a great manager and what he’s done over at Villa Park over the last three or four years has been amazing."

Arsenal do not need reminding of Villa’s threat. They were beaten 2-1 in this exact fixture last season, a result that stung and stayed with them.

"Of course, we know that they’re a very dangerous team, especially at home, but we’ll be prepared," Madueke said. "We’ll focus on ourselves and we’ll have full confidence that we can win the game."

So the champions head to Villa Park with a new defender, a new edge, and an old lesson still fresh. Konsa’s first steps in an Arsenal shirt may come on the very turf that made his name.

How he handles that stage will tell plenty about whether this title defence is built to last.
