Aston Villa Sign PSG Starlet Ibrahim Mbaye for €55m

Aston Villa have struck a deal with Paris Saint-Germain to sign Ibrahim Mbaye, snatching the teenage winger from under Liverpool’s nose and dropping another marker of their growing ambition.

The 18-year-old, long viewed as one of PSG’s brightest attacking prospects, is heading for the Premier League – just not to Merseyside. Liverpool had explored a move as they scoped out potential long-term successors to Mohamed Salah, but walked away when they saw the numbers.

PSG’s valuation shifted all summer depending on who was calling. For Liverpool, the French champions set the bar at around €70 million. There was a feeling that fee could be driven down, but the Anfield hierarchy chose not to burn time and energy haggling. Instead, they pushed hard to land top target Bradley Barcola, leaving Mbaye’s future to drift.

Villa were waiting.

Unai Emery’s side had already tried to prise Mbaye from Paris in January, only to be told he was not for sale. That stance has softened. With the Senegal international increasingly frustrated by a lack of minutes after his return from the Africa Cup of Nations, PSG have finally opened the door.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Villa have now reached an agreement worth €55 million, helped by the strong relationship between PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris. The move is being finalised, with Mbaye expected to sign a long-term contract at Villa Park.

This is no raw gamble. Despite his age, Mbaye already owns 42 senior appearances for PSG and has featured for Senegal at AFCON in the winter and at the World Cup this summer. He has seen elite dressing rooms, felt the weight of major tournaments, and lived with the pressure that comes with both.

What he has not had, at least in recent months, is regular football. After AFCON, his minutes in Paris dried up. For a teenager impatient to kick on, the need for a new stage became obvious.

Emery is ready to give him that stage. The Villa manager has been intent on adding another winger to his squad and sees Mbaye as a player who can play a prominent role rather than simply flesh out the depth chart.

Villa had also been in talks with AC Milan forward Rafael Leao in recent days, but the Portuguese attacker is understood to favour a move to Galatasaray, unconvinced by the terms on offer in Birmingham. That setback sharpened Villa’s focus on Mbaye and accelerated negotiations.

The timing could hardly be better for the club. A long-standing target finally available. A price they can live with. A manager who knows exactly how he wants to use him.

For Mbaye, the question now is simple: can he turn promise and flashes of brilliance in Paris into week-in, week-out impact in the Premier League? For Villa, the bet is that an 18-year-old with 42 PSG games and two major international tournaments behind him is ready to explode.
