Aston Villa Completes Major Signings: Ibrahim Mbaye and Taylor Harwood-Bellis

Aston Villa have moved decisively in the transfer market, sealing big-money deals for Senegal winger Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris St-Germain and English centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton.

Mbaye, 18, joins from PSG for 55m euros (£47m), a statement fee for a teenager who only made his senior debut in August 2024 but has already tasted the sharp end of elite football. Harwood-Bellis, 24, arrives after Villa finally broke Southampton’s resistance with a package that could reach £29m, having had two earlier bids knocked back. The initial outlay for the defender stands at £25m, with a further £4m tied to add-ons.

This is not a speculative punt on youth. Mbaye comes with medals and milestones. He featured 31 times in all competitions last season as PSG retained both their Ligue 1 crown and the Champions League, chipping in with three goals and two assists in a squad packed with attacking talent. On the international stage, he played in all four of Senegal’s matches at the 2026 World Cup and scored in a 3-1 defeat to France, becoming the youngest African player ever to score at a men’s World Cup.

Born in France, Mbaye came through the ranks at FC Versailles 78 before PSG picked him up in the summer of 2018. He climbed through their academy and broke into the first team at 16. Initially a France youth international, he switched allegiance to Senegal in 2025 through his father’s heritage, adding another layer of intrigue to one of Africa’s most exciting young forwards.

At Villa Park, he joins an attacking reshuffle already in motion. Alejandro Garnacho, Johan Manzambi and Nicolas Jackson have all come through the door as Unai Emery rebuilds his frontline with pace and unpredictability. Mbaye’s arrival only sharpens that edge.

But this is a rebuild born from loss. Villa’s Europa League-winning squad has been stripped of some of its pillars. Morgan Rogers has gone to Chelsea in a £117m deal, Ezri Konsa has been prised away by Arsenal for £55m, and Ollie Watkins has departed for Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia in a £51m move. Those exits leave gaps in leadership, goals and defensive stability.

Harwood-Bellis is tasked with filling part of that void at the back. A ball-playing centre-half in his prime years, he steps into a dressing room that has just waved goodbye to one of its defensive mainstays in Konsa. The fee, and the persistence shown after two rejected offers, underline how central Villa believe he will be to their next cycle.

Emery now stands at a familiar crossroads for ambitious clubs: heavy investment, heavy departures, and a squad that looks different in almost every key line. The talent is there. The question is whether this new-look Villa can turn bold recruitment into another season of trophies and Champions League nights, or whether this summer marks the start of a very different story.
