Aston Villa Break Transfer Record with Nicolas Jackson and Ibrahim Mbaye

Aston Villa’s summer rebuild has lurched into overdrive. The club have confirmed the record signing of Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea and struck a verbal agreement to bring in Paris Saint-Germain winger Ibrahim Mbaye, as Unai Emery tears up and redraws his forward line days before the window closes.

Jackson arrives for a fixed £47.5m fee, a figure that could climb to £65m with add-ons, according to Sky Sports News. However the final structure looks, the total package eclipses the £59.5m Villa committed to Johan Manzambi earlier in the window. Two marquee arrivals. Two transfer records broken in the space of a few weeks.

And this one comes with a clear purpose. Jackson has been signed to replace Ollie Watkins, who is closing in on a £50m move to Al Hilal. The England striker sat out the game against Brighton and is undergoing a medical ahead of his switch to Saudi Arabia. One of Villa’s talismans is heading out. A new focal point is already through the door.

Mbaye deal lined up after Leao blow

Villa have not stopped there. They have reached a verbal agreement with PSG to sign Ibrahim Mbaye, with a fee in the region of £47m understood to be in place between the clubs.

The move comes after Villa missed out on AC Milan forward Rafa Leao, who is joining Galatasaray. Rather than dwell on that setback, the recruitment team pivoted quickly to Mbaye, a player they have tracked for months.

Sky Sports News first reported in March that Villa were among the Premier League clubs weighing up a move for the winger. Liverpool also explored a deal earlier this summer but have since turned their attention to Mbaye’s team-mate Bradley Barcola.

Mbaye, who predominantly operates off the right, made 24 Ligue 1 appearances for PSG last season, scoring three times and providing two assists. At 21, he fits the profile Emery keeps referencing: high ceiling, big stage experience, room to grow.

Emery’s overhaul gathers pace

This is not a tweak of a settled squad; it is a major reset. Villa have already lost Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa and Lucas Digne in a summer of churn. Watkins is on his way. Emiliano Martinez also looks likely to depart before the deadline.

In their place, a new core is forming. Alejandro Garnacho, Johan Manzambi, Leon Goretzka, Joao Gomes, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Matteo Ruggeri and now Nicolas Jackson have all arrived. If Mbaye follows, Emery will have an almost reimagined starting XI to mould.

Speaking before Villa’s trip to Arsenal on Monday Night Football, the head coach was clear that the upheaval is part of a bigger plan, not a loss of control.

“We took some decisions because it's good for the club. We tried to compete as good as possible, but some situations are clear,” Emery said.

“It's the right way and decision. We don't want to be a club to sell players, but our responsibility is there. For the club it's a good deal.

“It's not changing our priorities to be competitive. We must be the same. Strong development with the players.

“I am confident and positive. The players we are signing are good players. We need to get balance with experience and players with huge potential.

“Of course, I want to keep some players, the ones who help us to be successful. But I accept it because I have experience before in the same situation.

“I expect to continue to do special and different ways. The objective is to get progressively in the same way. We will need time.”

Time is the one thing Emery will not have much of once the season bites. Jackson will be expected to fill Watkins’ goals. Mbaye, if and when he lands, will be asked to add thrust on the flank. The squad is changing fast. The expectations are not.
