Atletico Madrid's Firm Stance on Julián Álvarez Amid Barcelona's Deadline

Barcelona tried to set the tempo. Atletico de Madrid have just turned the music off.

After Joan Laporta publicly warned that Barça’s offer for Julián Álvarez would not “remain valid indefinitely”, Atletico president Enrique Cerezo has hit back with a calm but unmistakably firm response: the Argentine is going nowhere.

Laporta had made his stance clear, framing Barcelona as the club in control of the situation. “We’re not going to dance to anyone’s tune. We set the pace here,” he said, outlining that an offer was on the table for the forward but stressing it was neither “open-ended” nor “unlimited”. The message was obvious: Barcelona would not wait forever.

He underlined how highly the Catalan club rate Álvarez, explaining that the bid was made at the request of the coach and technical staff. “We like him a lot and I think he’s a fantastic player,” Laporta said, before hinting that the clock was ticking on any potential agreement.

There was also an attempt to cool any suggestion of tension between the clubs. Laporta pointed to a “very good relationship” and described recent noise around the proposal as the product of “some confusion” that he claims to have clarified. From Barcelona’s side, the story was that they had simply laid down an offer and were now waiting to see whether Atletico would choose an “alternative”, at which point the proposal would stay valid. No pressure, Laporta insisted. Just a stance.

Atletico’s answer has now arrived, and it leaves little room for interpretation.

Cerezo, speaking to the media, first acknowledged the friendship and respect between the two presidents. “Joan Laporta is a good friend, he’s a great president,” he said. Then came the pivot, and with it the core of Atletico’s position.

“He knows very well, as do all of you, where Julián Álvarez will be playing next year.”

It was a line delivered with the assurance of a man backed by a long contract and a clear internal decision. Álvarez is tied to Atletico until June 2030, and Cerezo leaned heavily on that fact as he reinforced the club’s ownership and authority over the player’s future.

The saga has not only been about money and contracts. Speculation around Álvarez’s actions and possible missteps off the pitch had raised the question of whether bridges might have been burned in Madrid. Cerezo shut that down as well.

“In this life, we all make mistakes, everything can be forgiven,” he said, before nailing down Atletico’s stance one final time: “I insist that he is a player of Atletico de Madrid.”

Barcelona tried to frame the chase on their terms, talking about deadlines, validity, and pace. Atletico have replied with something simpler: Álvarez is theirs, under contract, forgiven, and expected to be wearing red and white next season.
