Atlético Madrid Rejects Osimhen Offer as Simeone Supports Álvarez

Atlético Madrid have been offered a proven goalscorer, a Champions League-tested centre-forward willing to cut his wages to play under Diego Simeone. They have still walked away.

Victor Osimhen, currently leading the line for Galatasaray, has been proposed to Atlético through intermediaries in a deal worth around €75 million, according to Club Uria. For many clubs, that kind of opportunity would trigger an internal scramble. At the Metropolitano, the answer was firm and immediate: no.

A €75m Chance Atlético Won’t Take

The numbers tell part of the story. A €75m fee, a 27‑year‑old Nigeria international, and a long-term contract in Istanbul running until 2029. Any negotiation would start from a position of financial strength for Galatasaray.

Atlético simply do not have the cash flow to plunge into that kind of high-profile operation in this window. The club’s hierarchy has made that clear. This is not the market in which they can throw €75m at a striker, no matter how tempting the profile.

But the refusal is not only about money.

Álvarez at the Heart of Simeone’s Plan

In Madrid, the central striker’s role already belongs to Julián Álvarez. Internally, there is no debate. The club counts on the Argentine and is not entertaining any sale. That conviction shapes everything.

Bringing in Osimhen at a huge cost would not just stretch the finances; it would cut straight across the project Simeone and the board are building around Álvarez. From the Metropolitano’s perspective, it is a luxury they neither need nor want.

So while intermediaries floated Osimhen’s name and price, Atlético’s response reflected both their balance sheet and their belief in the man they already have up front.

Osimhen’s Gesture and Simeone’s Pull

What makes this story more striking is Osimhen’s stance. The forward, who enjoys a sizeable net salary in Turkey thanks to tax exemptions for foreign residents, signalled he was prepared to earn less to make the move happen. That willingness to sacrifice underlines how much he wanted to work with Simeone.

His admiration for Atlético’s coach is no secret. After facing them in the Champions League in January, Osimhen spoke openly about the impression Simeone and his team had made on him:

"I like him, I have always been a fan of their coach. I've met him a couple of times. They play aggressively and have an identity.

The coach has been there for many years, so the players are used to his style of play. That’s why I praise the performance we put in; Atlético is one of the best teams in the world, and getting a result like a draw against them shows you’re on the right track."

Those words now sit against the backdrop of a move that, at least for this summer, will not happen. The admiration is mutual on a footballing level, but the operation does not fit Atlético’s reality.

Market Wide Open, But Price Still High

Osimhen is not being shopped to just one club. His name is circulating at the top end of the European market. Intermediaries have also offered him to Barcelona, Arsenal and Tottenham.

Spurs have gone beyond polite interest. They have tabled a concrete bid exceeding €55m. It still falls well short of Galatasaray’s valuation. For now, the Turkish champions are standing firm, and any buyer will have to climb closer to that €75m figure to truly test their resolve.

With Atlético closing the door — squeezed by finances and convinced by Álvarez — the race for Osimhen shifts elsewhere. Barcelona, Arsenal, Tottenham: the stage is set. His representatives will keep working the phones, looking for the club ready to match both his ambition and Galatasaray’s price.

The question now is simple: who will blink first, the suitors or the sellers?
