Aurelien Tchouameni's Future at Real Madrid in Doubt
The message to Aurelien Tchouameni from Real Madrid has been blunt enough: his long-term place at the Bernabeu is no longer guaranteed. For Liverpool and Manchester United, that has sounded like an alarm bell and an invitation all at once.
Lines of communication between the France international’s camp and both Premier League giants have stayed open throughout the summer. Now those conversations suddenly feel more urgent. With Jose Mourinho ripping into Madrid’s squad and reshaping the spine of his team, Tchouameni has gone from cornerstone to potential collateral.
Mourinho’s Rebuild Puts Tchouameni on the Line
Mourinho’s arrival has triggered a full-scale reconstruction at the Santiago Bernabeu. The defensive line has already been bolstered: Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries and Marc Cucurella have all walked through the door. Bernardo Silva has arrived from Manchester City to refresh the midfield.
And Madrid are not done.
- Enzo Fernandez remains high on their list.
- Rodri is still admired inside Valdebebas.
- West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes is being tracked closely.
- There is also talk of a renewed push for Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise, with Madrid prepared to spend heavily without needing to go near world-record territory.
Something has to give. In a crowded, increasingly expensive midfield, the pressure is building on those already in the building. Tchouameni, once untouchable, now finds himself among the names being discussed as a potential sacrifice.
His status had already taken a knock earlier this year after a well-publicised training-ground clash with Federico Valverde. At that point, Madrid moved quickly to insist he remained central to their plans and dismissed any notion of a sale. That stance has softened. Mourinho’s vision is different, and Tchouameni has now been told there are no assurances about his role.
Eduardo Camavinga, another French international who once looked like a long-term pillar, has also been warned he could be vulnerable if more midfielders arrive.
Liverpool and United Ready to Pounce
That shift has not gone unnoticed in England. Liverpool and Manchester United have both been fully briefed on the changing landscape in Madrid and are poised to act if the door opens.
Liverpool’s interest is hardly new. They chased Tchouameni aggressively during his Monaco days before losing out to Madrid in 2022, and their scouting department has never really taken its eyes off him. With question marks over the long-term futures of several of their own midfielders, and with the club weighing options beyond domestic targets Adam Wharton and Alex Scott, Tchouameni is seen as a ready-made upgrade – a player who could walk into Anfield and immediately lift the level of the entire unit.
Manchester United see the same thing, through a slightly different lens. At Old Trafford, the hierarchy have tracked Tchouameni for years and regard him as one of the elite holding midfielders in the game. Internally, he is viewed as a potential transformer: someone who could change the balance, control and authority of their midfield in a way few others on the market can.
Arsenal and Chelsea are watching from a distance, aware of the situation but not currently as advanced. For now, Liverpool and United sit in the strongest positions if Madrid formally invite offers.
The Price of a Sacrifice
Inside Madrid, there is a clear understanding that major signings need major funding. Tchouameni is considered one of the club’s most valuable saleable assets – a player who can command a huge fee without weakening the dressing room’s leadership core in the way an exit for a senior figure might.
He has two years left on his current contract. Sources in Spain indicate Madrid would look for around €100m (£87m, $115m) to sign off on a sale. Push much higher than that, and they risk scaring off even the richest suitors in a market already wary of inflated valuations.
Liverpool and United have both shown in recent windows that they are prepared to walk away when numbers get silly. United have already stepped back from deals for Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson due to soaring demands. Liverpool, too, have resisted being dragged into overpaying for domestic targets.
Tchouameni sits in a different category. His age, pedigree and proven level in the Champions League and for France give clubs a fee they can justify to their boards and fanbases. This is not a gamble on potential; this is paying for a player already operating at the top of the game.
Madrid know it. They believe his stock is high enough now to command a premium without entering fantasy territory. Sell at the right moment, and they can help bankroll Mourinho’s next wave of signings.
A Midfield Domino Waiting to Fall
As Mourinho’s rebuild gathers pace, the Tchouameni situation is starting to look like one of the defining transfer stories of the window. One decision in Madrid could reshape the midfields of two of England’s biggest clubs.
For Liverpool, this is a second chance at a player they once viewed as the ideal successor in the heart of their team. For Manchester United, it is an opportunity to finally anchor a midfield that has felt unbalanced for years.
Madrid hold the cards for now. But with the squad evolving, money needed, and competition for places intensifying, the question is no longer whether Tchouameni is available in theory.
It is how long Madrid can afford not to cash in.
