Balraj Landa has traded the fringes of the English Premier League for the glare of a new life in Hong Kong – and he sounds ready to embrace every uncomfortable minute of it.

Released by AFC Bournemouth in February, the 21-year-old attacking midfielder has signed for Southern ahead of the new Hong Kong Premier League season, completing a rapid switch from England’s non-league backwaters to Asia’s top tier in the city.

The move didn’t arrive by chance. Former Fulham defender and ex-Southern player-manager Zesh Rehman helped open the door, and once the opportunity landed, Landa barely paused.

“The decision to come was a no-brainer,” he said. His first reaction? “What an opportunity to get.”

For a player who has already felt the sharp edge of the professional game, that word – opportunity – matters. After leaving Bournemouth, Landa dropped into non-league with Salisbury City and Dorchester Town, grinding through the reality that sits far from Premier League TV gloss. Now, he has a different kind of test: new league, new culture, no safety net.

“It ticks all the boxes for me,” Landa explained. “It’s a good platform to show myself in Asia, and to really get my name out there. On the non-football side, it’s a chance to live on the other side of the world, to adapt and to survive by myself.”

That last line tells you as much about his mindset as any scouting report. This isn’t just a career move; it’s a personal leap.

On the pitch, Southern are getting a two-footed, “very technical and creative” attacking midfielder, a player shaped by a long education in English academies. Landa joined Southampton at just eight years old, learning the game in one of the country’s most respected youth systems before his spell at Bournemouth.

Now the comfort of familiar surroundings has gone. The crowds, the climate, the style of play – everything changes. The ambition does not.
