Barcelona's Search for a New Centre-Back: Inacio Link Dismissed

Barcelona’s search for a new centre-back has taken a clear turn – and it does not lead to Lisbon.

With Ronald Araujo sent out on loan to Liverpool this summer, the captain’s departure opened up a sizeable gap at the heart of Barça’s defence. The Uruguayan needed a reset after two punishing seasons in Catalonia; Anfield will now be the stage for that reboot.

His exit, though, left Barcelona with a question: trust the academy or dive back into a market they can barely afford?

Inacio talk shut down

One of the first names thrown into the rumour mill was Goncalo Inacio, Sporting CP’s left-footed centre-back and one of Portugal’s most coveted defenders.

That link has now been firmly dismissed.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona are not in talks with Inacio and have denied that any deal is being worked on. His wording was blunt: there are “zero” ongoing negotiations between Barça and the 24-year-old.

That matters because the club are still widely expected to move for another central defender before the window closes. Inacio, though, is not on the active list.

Flick draws a line

The stance on Inacio mirrors an earlier episode.

Romano points out that the situation is similar to the one involving Cristian Romero. Barcelona explored the possibility of signing the Argentine, but Hansi Flick was not convinced and chose not to green-light the operation.

The same dynamic applies here. Flick and the sporting department are aligned: they do not plan to pursue Inacio. For now, that path is effectively shut.

Inacio has grown into a dependable presence in Portugal, but stepping into Barcelona’s back line is a different level of scrutiny and demand. The club’s technical staff are clearly not ready to make that leap of faith.

Market still very much alive

Rejecting Inacio does not mean Barcelona are done with defenders.

With roughly a week left before deadline day, the club are actively scanning the market for reinforcements. The defensive puzzle could yet become more complicated if Alejandro Balde leaves; the left-back is another player who could be moved on before the window shuts.

If Balde goes, Barça will not just need a centre-back. They will need cover at left-back as well.

That is why Deco is considering profiles who can tick both boxes: a left-footed central defender who can also operate at full-back. Versatility, not just reputation, is driving the search.

Barcelona still have key transfer decisions to make in the coming days. The Araujo gap is real, the clock is ticking, and the next defender they choose will say plenty about how bold – or cautious – this new era intends to be.
