Barcelona Strikes Deal with PSG for Ferran Torres, Avoids €10m Clause

Barcelona have turned Ferran Torres’ departure into a much-needed piece of financial good news, striking a deal with Paris Saint-Germain that keeps a costly clause with Manchester City firmly in the drawer.

According to journalist Nil Sola, Torres is set to join PSG for under €50 million on a five-year contract, a fee that lands neatly below a key trigger in his original move from City to Camp Nou in 2022.

Clause avoided, profit secured

City had inserted a sell-on condition that would have handed them €10m if Barcelona sold the Spain international for €55m or more. By agreeing a price below that threshold, Barça avoid that extra payment while still booking a profit on a player whose future in Catalonia had grown increasingly uncertain.

Another clause tied to Torres’ deal would have seen Barcelona pay City an additional €8m if they renewed his contract. That scenario is now off the table as the forward prepares to swap La Liga for Ligue 1.

For a club still wrestling with tight financial margins, skipping both potential payments and banking a solid fee for Torres represents a significant boost. The numbers matter in Barcelona right now, and this deal has been calibrated down to the last euro.

Striker gap grows

The sporting picture is far less tidy.

If Torres completes his move to PSG, Barcelona will be left without a natural senior striker, having already allowed Robert Lewandowski to leave as a free agent. Goals, once funneled through one of Europe’s most prolific No. 9s, now look in short supply.

The Catalans have identified Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez as a primary target to plug that gap. They even went as far as lodging a €100m bid. Atletico’s response was blunt: not for sale. For the moment, that pursuit is stuck.

Barcelona have also weighed up other heavyweight and emerging options. Harry Kane, now settled at Bayern Munich, has been on their radar as a potential statement signing in the post-Lewandowski era. But the England captain is set to extend his contract with the German champions, closing that door just as it began to creak open.

Further down the age curve, Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi has been considered as a more developmental alternative to the former Man City forward. Any move there is complicated too. The youngster is expected to miss three to four months with a foot injury, hardly the profile of an instant fix for a team that needs goals now.

Barcelona have won the numbers game with Torres and Manchester City. The balance sheet looks healthier. The squad does not. With the season edging closer and the No. 9 role still vacant, the next move in this striker search will say a lot about where the club is really heading.
