Barcelona Fails to Plan Farewell for Messi Amid Open Wounds

Barcelona are not preparing any tribute match or official farewell for Lionel Messi, despite the club icon edging towards the twilight of his career.

Journalist Adrian Sanchez has told Barça Universal that there is currently no project inside the club to organise a formal homage to the greatest player in Barça’s history. No date pencilled in. No friendly being discussed. Nothing concrete on the table.

It is a striking reality for a club that built an era – and an identity – around the Argentine.

A broken story that never really ended

Messi’s place in Barcelona’s history is untouchable. His exit in 2021 is the part nobody has been able to digest.

That separation did not come from a tactical rethink or a sporting decision. Barcelona wanted to renew him. Messi wanted to stay. But La Liga’s financial rules and wage limits boxed the club into a corner, and the numbers never worked.

Joan Laporta had campaigned for the presidency on a promise: keep Messi at Camp Nou. When the time came, Barcelona pulled the contract offer. The club announced his departure. Messi left in tears and flew to Paris Saint-Germain.

The damage went beyond a transfer. It tore at the bond between Messi and Laporta. The president later admitted that their relationship was “not what it used to be”. He even described an awkward moment at a Ballon d’Or gala, when Messi felt they should not greet each other at all.

That kind of history does not lend itself to easy tributes or carefully staged farewells.

Talk of a tribute, but no action

Earlier this year, whispers began to grow. A tribute match for Messi? A grand night at Camp Nou – or at least at the rebuilt version of it – to finally say goodbye properly?

Laporta never shut the door on the idea. On the contrary, he publicly declared that “Leo deserves a statue at Camp Nou”. For many supporters, that sounded like the first step towards a reconciliation, or at least a ceremonial closure.

Yet the latest indications point in the opposite direction. Despite the rhetoric, Barcelona have not moved towards an official farewell game or event. The concept remains just that: a concept.

Laporta continues to call Messi a Barcelona legend. He has spoken of his hope that, with time, the relationship can heal. He has also floated the idea that a major public tribute could arrive once the Camp Nou renovation is finished.

For now, though, the club is not working on it. No statue unveiling. No testimonial. No night of applause for the player who defined an era.

The stadium will change. The team has already changed. The question is whether Barcelona and Messi will ever find the right moment – and the right way – to close their story together.
